Hi. I have 2 pentium 200MMX with 64RAM running under Win98, connected with a 10mbps ethernet, the server has a cable modem witch is shared by the LAN using Sygate (also used Wingate once). The internet connection and playing mpg videos (50megs) on my client while the files where on the server worked fine before, never had a problem.

But I don't know what happened, my internet connection busted, I always downloaded at 1.1k/s or it would just froze in the middel. When playing mpgs, the first or two clips run smoothly, but then the image starts to run VERY slow (like playing a mpg on a VERY slow system kinda like) and if I let it keep playing, it freezes and stops playing cauz it's too slow. But the thing is, that if I play a mpg and it freezes, when I close the mpg, I realize that all my system is slow also. Have to reboot the return the system to normal. Then again, I start a mpg clip, same thing (even that sometimes, I can't even play all of the first clip that it freeze after slowing down). EVERYTIME!!! Without any exceptions. The mpg plays well for the first minute or so, then starts to lose frame then it's the sound that starts to jump, then it freezes when it's too slow to play. Close the mpg, the system is very slow and unstable also.

I have TCP/IP and NetBUI has protocole on both systems, use microsoft network (the usual for LANing).

I think I fixed the internet connection thought by reading this section (I put in my registry DefaultRcvWindow=8192 and MaxMTU=1500) and downloaded something, works fine now.

Thought that it would fix my mpg playing also, but NO, same thing, had to reboot again ^_^.

What's the problem?
Help would be appreciated.

One last thing, I formated my client, and started all over again. Same thing.

Look in your Bios and see how it is allocating your memory. Also check your virtual memory settings along with you registry size. With a 200 I like to run at least 75 min and 135 max on the virtual memory. Also Defrag your HD. A badly fragmented HD can have severe adverse effects on system performance. If it continues to run slow after that, when you quit the MPG chack you task manager and try to see what is hogging all the resources. Update your antivirus, and look especially for memory viruses. They suck and can be a pain to remove sonetimes. There are countless things that I can think of. If it still isnt working, say so. I will research this a little for you.

Thanks for the nfo. But, I don't know what happened, I just decided to shut down the server and the client, then booted up the client without any network connection. Played the mpegs, and they run fine now. I really don't know what was the problem but I think it's ok now, been playing mpegs for like 3 hours now, hehehe, and the system is still fine. Booted up my server and rebooted my client to connect to the network and still works fine. Funny and strange phenomenon!!
