Yes! this would work great. Put two nics in it, run one to a hub or switch for your lan. Put linux on it, and set up a firewall / gateway using ipchains. It will be fast, add security, and you wont even know it is there.

If you have no Linux experience you will definitely know it is there when you first configure it. After that you can forget about it.
