I am assuming you are using windows machines. File and print sharing lets you see and share files and printers in network neighborhood. You can also map network drives so the show up in explorer or my computer just as if they were local. It is a lot more convienient than FTP. You can set it up proerly wher it isn't that big of a risk. Use firewalls, difficult passwords, and don't bind it to the uplink NIC.

Bdog has given you some excellent information. When setup correctly you CAN enable file and printer sharing on the "local" network and not have it avaliable to the "internet". The key issue is how you do the "binding" of the network protocols. You can read about this from many websites including Steve Gibsons www.grc.com (http://www.grc.com)

Yes i recently setup up two comp using one cable modem. I wanted to use file and print sharing but i know its a big security risk. I was wondering isn't file and print sharing the same sort of like and ftp?? Except you can't print??? Also if you did turn file and print sharing on how do you access it?

If File and print sharing is just like an ftp i rather use that since i can turn it on and off when i like. Or are there any other programs out there that acted like file and print sharing?
