Would like to build a system around this chip,
anyone think it is possible to do. if so what would be the best mobo for it.
it was taken out of a Pentium MMX board Jetway 512K sound and audio.

I don't want to discourage you,but I have some real heartburn with this particular chip.At 2.9 volts, some of these chips run hot enough to melt a cpu fan. Some were ok,and some were junk right from the start. They don't like sdram either.I wouldn't spend a lot of money on this one. Hi Baffled...Yes, I beleive that was one of the hottest chips made. Stability may be a big problem with it. IMHO, I'd toss it.

I'm a dunce, I was thinking Intel. I keep forgetting that there used to be other chip makers out there http://www.sysopt.com/forum/biggrin.gif I have to get out more.

Well that was fast, the chip was installed in
a csvip303 minitower case w/ps on the mobo mentioned and an oversized cooling fan mounted on it, with mm32sdram.It worked great for my wife but I demanded too much of it, so we took it out and installed K6-2-300 3D now and 64 m of ram, are you sure there isn't some good left in the little thing, enough to get a second system under way and upgrade later.

aBill- The 200's are a good chip(166mhz) I still have two of them.
baffled-If it ran ok in the wifes machine / reuse it. The oversized heatsink and fan should tell you something! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif
baffled, did you say it was a IBM 233 or a Pentium 233?

Welcome baffled! IBM233? Well, if it was me, I would get me some used parts and build a backup system. You won't spend alot of money, and will learn alot about how to build & troubleshoot. And have a spare computer, which can come in real handy.
Just my $0.02. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Like Socalgal says if you want to build a system just for the experience then have a bash. If the processor causes you problems you can always replace it with a Winchip 2 or a low end K6-2 for less than 50 dollars.
Motherboard? If you want AT format and cheap the PCChips M598 (integreated video + sound)is on my shopping list for a low-cost, no thrills system. Several people around here (Mr C for example) seem pretty knowledgable about them which might be useful if you have problems.

my receipt says IBM 233+ cpu. thanks for the $0.02 Socalgal yours is always welcome. This chip will definitly be used in my own build, what i need is some advice as to a good mobo to put it in, one that on the low end i can use the cyrix,on the high end use at least P11-450. Any thoughts. this is a wonderful spot and the people seem pretty nice to.Thanks for all of your input.
I hope you meant to say K6-2/450 instead of P2-450. You see a P2 has a totally different mb design than all the others mentioned, and as such, requires a slot-1 type socket, so the mb is not adaptable to any other layout cpu. The P233MMX and lower and the AMD's all use a socket-7 or even a super socket-7 compatible motherboard (that means it is 100Mhz bus speed capable).
