Hi,

I have a laptop and a PC and I want to connect them together so I can transfer files etc.

I have a PCMCIA LAN adapter so that I can plug an RJ-25 UTP cable into the laptop and a network card with a socket for RJ-25 in my PC.

Is it possible to directly connect the two machines together without a hub in between or will this just damage them? (I've tried connecting them directly but they don't appear to find each other). Help!

Cheers,
Si

You will need either a hub, or a crossover cable. One of the two.

If you get a hub you'll need another cable anyway; so I'd get a crossover cable.

In a crossover cable you cross wires 1 and 3 & 2 and 6

Hey Siwilmer.
I've got two systems networked with a crossover cable. Everything works fine.File transfers, multi-player gaming, printing, it all works great.

Cheers guys!

I've got a crossover now and it works really well. No more using floppies to transfer files for me! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
