Hey!
You were helpful before in my string "peer to peer w/ NT&W98 network newbie"
I got them running and talking to each other. Used the following protocals reccommended by http://www.homepclan.com/install.htm:
Client for Microsoft Networks
Your Ethernet Adapter [3com 3c905BTX 10/100]
TCP/IP---> Dial Up Adapter
TCP/IP---> Your Ethernet Adapter
File and Printer Sharing For Microsoft Networks
Great! For about one day.
Then I noticed that I couldn't use my modem. So, being the eternal tweaker I am. I tried to "fix" it.
Well long story short, I fixed it good. can't use my modem or have the machines talk to each other.
The problem I believe is the TCPIP- can't seem to get it to say->
TCP/IP---> Dial Up Adapter
TCP/IP---> 3com nic
in the network box. I've tried installing TCPIP numerous times but I can't get it to say
"--->dial up" or
"--->my nic""
Just says "TCPIP"
I've removed the modem, and reinstalled it. Removed the nic and reinstalled it. removed both and reinstalled both at the same time- well every possible permutation of that scenario you can imagine... no help.
I've gotten it to the point where 98 network neighborhood sees itself but not the NT machine. and same for the NT machine, sees itself in network neighborhood but not the 98 machine.
Any advice?
I really don't care about the modem cuz I'm getting the DSL on the 30th. just want my machines to be able to talk to each other...
how do I get the TCPIP back the way I had it?
Thanks!
-Finger

You took out the hardware, but what happened to the protocol bindings?? Did you unbind the TCP/IP protocol and rebind it at both ends??
Did you go into the 98 machine in safe mode and check device manager to make sure the hardware settings weren't still ghosted in there? - might fix that end.
Did you remember to re-install the latest service pack in NT once you made all those changes?
That's all that comes to mind at the moment.

erTried starting from as much of a "scratch" as I could. removed ALL services, bindings and adapters. and reinstalled one by one and combinative. couldn't get that
TCPIP--->dialup
or
TCPIP--->"nic"
it would just say
TCPIP
TCPIP
On unbinding and rebinding, could you elaborate? That one is over my head. I'm assuming you mean binding TCPIP to my dial up and nic but I can't seem to figure out how...
Hadn't thought of going in safe, will check that out tonight.
HEY! Service pack hadn't even crossed my mind. I'll give that a shot too -thanks!

Thanks all
got it going under add/remove programs. the TCPIP needed to be bound to the nic and modem from there not from networking.
Also, I've discovered you need just one more thing aside from TCPIP. A network will not function until you install "file sharing for microsoft networks" service or an equivilent. This was never made clear...
Still thanks to all for their input in helping me with my latest headache/project.

I clicked on the link in your first post but got file not found error. Do you have any other protocol installed? You definitely don't want "file and printer sharing" bound to the tcp/ip protocol especially if you get dsl.

JRoberts the URL is actually http://www.homepclan.com/install.htm
(somehow Finger ended up with a : at the end of the url)
Glad to hear you it got all straightend out Finger http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Thanks Mntsnow, I didn't even notice the :
finger,
You should go to the shields up site and see what it has to say about your network. Here's the link http://grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2
If it tells you that some of your ports are wide open (I'm pretty sure it will since you have "file and printer sharing" bound to the tcp/ip protocol) then you really need to add another protocol like netbeui and bind "file and printer sharing" to it.

Thanks I shall certainly check that out. Will a program like Black Ice help in this circumstance? I've got a copy someone gave me... Till now didn't have much use for it so I didn't install or research what it does.
Also, JROBERTS-
I am not sure that File and print sharing is bound to the TCPIP. wouldn't the entry look like this?-->
TCPIP-->File and print sharing for Microsoft networks
Is that what "bound" means? when you've got the arrow?

Hi finger
To see if bound: Click on TCP/IP in the Control Panel/Network dialog box list, then TCP/IP Properties, Bindings tab. There you will see if File/Print sharing is bound to TCP/IP.
If so, uncheck that box, then follow JRoberts suggestion re NetBEUI. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

does that go for both the dial up and nic TCPIP?

Hi finger
To unbind in your situation... I'm not sure. My configs may be different due to my DSL and firewall (BlackICE). So.. I'm afraid I'll have to leave that answer for someone who knows for sure.
With my setup, the DSL NIC wanted TCP/IP otherwise the blackd (BID VXD) wouldn't load. And with my DSL soft, it seems to want TCP/IP on the adapters too.. so looks like I have more work to do myself. Sorry... http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif

Well I'm happy to report that my ports cannot be probed. My wife was also quite happy to hear it.
All were closed with the exception of Net Bios, which was in "stealth" mode.
At this point I'm not too worried about it. When I get the DSL put in I'll start getting anal (huh huh I said "probed" and "anal" in the same message)about security. at this point well... I don't have anything on these machines yet that won't be able to be fixed within an hour or at most two.
So, the next question is- Do I use the W98 machine to be the gateway or the NT?
NT=
Abit BP6 W/ 2 non oc'd C500's
128M PC100
Used for 3D Studio Max and Pshop. Does spend a medium amount of its' time rendering 3D animations.
W98=
Asus P//I-P55T2P4 W/ a P200
128M EDO
Used for Net cruising and some games. Word Processing etc.
I'd like to keep the NT machine as "clean" (free of miscellaneous shtuff) as possible to help with render speeds. BUT if I can achieve better security with it for a gateway then that would supercede the speed value.
Thoughts?
thanks!!

Well with the proxy software that is avaliable (such as SyGate) that works with BlackIce you can use your Win9x machine just fine as your surfing/proxy machine with out it bogging down. and keep your NT machine "Clean" as you desire http://www.sysopt.com/forum/biggrin.gif
