Have you looked to LiteStep as an alternative desktop interface? Made to be highly customized. I suppose you can use the images mentioned above. Do your own or select from the many pre-made 'themes' available. It's not just wall paper.

This reminds me of a true story of ironic justice, about a guy who was apparently using a saguaro for shotgun practice in the Arizona desert when he turned to go back to his vehicle to leave or get more ammo the cactus fell on him and killed him. Authorities found his crushed remains after a passing motorist reported seeing the victim's vehicle.

I just thought it was a bit funny that he was blasting this seemingly defensless plant when suddenly Wham! - the brainless cacti had the last word. Sorry I don't have a link to the story.
