I have been asked about this problem a number of times now: someone gets an email with an attachment that comes as garbled text and it will not open with any of the known extensions - the format is almost always known as "MIME" what am I missing?
This also occasionally happened to me on my "now defunct" AOL account.

Might find some info here:

I used to have the same problem with my AOL account. It's been a long time, but I think it had something to do with uuencode/uudecode. I vaguely remember getting a uudecoder to pass the mail through before the MIME-encoded attachments were readable.
Hope this helps out...
Tony
P.S. Now that I use Netscape I don't have that problem any more!

Great link OuTpaTienT!
That was exactly what I was looking for. Of 4 complaints I have heard lately all 4 have been over this MIME thing.

It is my understanding that a file with an "mime" file extension can be opened with winzip. A buddy of mine used to send me files in that format and i am pretty sure i had to use winzip to open or look at them.

Here (http://hotfiles.zdnet.com/cgi-bin/texis/swlib/hotfiles/search.html) is a list of programs that can open MIME files. Yes Winzip will open them. It seems to be something AOL does.
Seems to not want to save my search? Anyway just type MIME in the search box and you will get the results. Sorry about that.
