If I am behind a firewall that blocks me from using icq, i.m., yahoo pager and all those, is there anyway I can get past it? I am asking this because I need this to talk to friends at long distances, yet the firewall blocks us from using them. The firewall is operated through a proxy server, so if you have any ways to get through this, please let me know.
thanks,

Is the firewall your own? or your works? or your ISP? If it's yours Which software is it? If it's your works or ISP's you will need to talk with the systems admin and find out which "ports" they are allowing to be open and or if they are willing to open the ports that ICQ uses (you can find out which one's from the FAQ's on ICQ's web site.

the firewall is not my own. I go to a private boardingschool and they control our internet, and I would like to use icq which they have blocked off. I know that the port number is 8080 and the proxy address is 172.16.1.2 if that helps any.

You will need to talk to your school's network admin and let him know that you are wanting to use ICQ and see if he will open the ports that are needed...Other than that your out of luck /forum/frown.gif

well, I don't think they will budge, we have tried talking, petitions, amending the subject to the dean, president, commandant, nothing works, well thanks for the input.
