Can I use TWO Nic's in one computer?

I have a quick question.
My brother is having me build him a new computer (AMD450) and he is going to give his old computer to the kids. I ask about this as he is on a "cable" type internet connection that is hooked up to his current computer thru the NIC card...But he wants to network the computers together and Share the internet connection (will use spoonproxy/wingate ect) but as I see it he will need a 2nd Nic in the computer that will be the "proxy server"...How do I set this up?

You are right on track with this. To really do this properly, you need two NICs in the primary machine with the cable connection. One is for the internet, one is for the local LAN. Most proxy programs will give you some pointers as to how to set up networking on both machines. Some programs even offer a DHCP server that will configure the client machine for you, at least as far as IP addresses. For network cards, it is a lot easier to manage if you pick a second network card for the main machine that is different from the one that is already in it. That makes it 100% easier to tell which is which when you go to config them.

I recommend you look at SyGate for a proxy program. It is much easier to setup the client machines with, and works with quite a few more programs to boot. www.sygate.com (http://www.sygate.com) They have a lot of info about how to setup networking on both the server and client machines. That should help get you started.

I will look into SyGate. I will be putting a Lynksys and Ovislynk Nic cards in to the machine (thought it might be best to beable to tell which card had the "local lan IP" and which one had the "cable lan IP". I will continue to keep you posted!

You don't NEED 2 NIC cards in one system to share an Internet connection. I had my system networked with coax up until 5 days ago when I got a cable modem. Till then I was able to use i.Share to share the connection. It will be a slow connect if you are sharing a dialup modem, since the pipe is only so big. My cable modem was 10BaseT so I had to buy a hub and connect the cable modem to the uplink port, since you can't run both coax and 10BaseT off 1 NIC.
Want about 500 feet of coax and a bunch of tees and terminators cheap? <G>

The type of Internet connection that my brother has is from a company called "AIRSWITCH" and they provide internet access thru a "coax" lan type connection and he is assigned a STATIC IP address (ONE that identifies him on the network) so it has to be "connected" to one of the computers for it to work...thus the NEED FOR 2 nic's ONE for the internet connection (airswitch's network) and ONE for HIS home network.
