Hello all,

I've got a curious problem here so it's my turn to ask a question of you guys http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif. I've got two PC's networked together here, and am using two D-Link DFE 530TX PCI 10/100 cards, connected via Cat-5 cable (about 50ft.) and a D-link 10/100 switchable 4 port hub. The motherboard in system 1 is a Tyan Thunderbolt, and system 2 has an Abit BX6.

When I first got the hardware, 100Mbps worked like a charm for days. No problems. But, one day I decided to connect my laptop to the hub, and it wouldn't work at 100Mbps (because my ethernet card on the laptop is only 10Mbps). So I switched the hub down to 10Mbps and the laptop worked fine.

But afterwards when I switched the hub back to 100Mbps, the network never worked again at that speed. It works fine when I "downshift" to 10Mbps, but not 100. Basically, the PC's can't see each other. No ping, no network neighborhood, nada. But, switch it down to 10Mbps, and bingo, works fine.

Any ideas? I've tried a variety of settings to no avail. I also tried using the 10/100Mbps built in ethernet controller of the Tyan board but can't get 100 out of it either (it detects the line as 100 but doesn't get packets back that it sends out).

I'm not a network guru, just a local beanhead, but I think it's possible the switch failed on the hub. Call me a dummy, but I think you ought to try another hub, just in case http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

I agree. And by the way, the new D-link 5 port 10/100 Hub is automatic and can run 100 speed and 10 speed devices at the same time. I have several of them and think they are great for only about $75.

since it is manageable.. check the duplex on the switch/hub.
