Dual NIC's?

My network is using Coax (with BNC connectors) all but one of my cards are combos (RJ45 and BNC). Can I use a crossover without a hub between two PC's and have both on the existing lan? I need (want) to add my laptop and don't want to buy a hub for the one system. I know I will need a NIC for the laptop, but will I need to put two cards in one system or can I use a combo card to link the laptop?
