simple networking

I what to know how to set up the simplest network between 2 computer ( Sharing a dorm room with a friend ) I really don't want to fool with WinNT and i'm really rough with linux. What kinda hard wear and soft wear do I need ?

Two 10MB or 10/100MB ethernet cards $10.00 each, and a $6.00 CROSSOVER cable (make sure it's a crossover cable. Install the Windows95 communications options.

*Win95, inspite of all the knocks it takes, has great native networking support. Setup in Control Panel/Network and enable file sharing..you're done.

10$? Sure, don't get linksys they funk up a lot. I have a broken linksys 5 port 100baseTX hub and a very very very talkative (collision-lovin) linksys network card (pci). Now I have an 8 port 100baseTX Netgear hub along with NetGear netcards, pci, 100baseT in full effect! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif Make sure you get pci, you can pick deeez suckas up for about 39$

Linksys 14 ethernet ISA card is good. I havn't had any problems with it at all. Why are you talking about hubs, if anything get a switch, but Maxx sure as hell doesn't need either of them to do what he is talking about.
Maxx, do what CMonster said, that's all you need. I personnally would spend a few more $'s on the ethernet cards though.

A switch? Isn't a switch supposed to distribute lan bandiwidth and they cost an arm and leg? I also heard that they link servers with 100baseT, lets say 2 servers on a 10baseT network that need a fast connection, have a switch and link a 100baseT hub to that switch with the uplink port on the 4port and a 8 port 10baseT hub for the computers that don't need that much of a pipeline.

To cover your two player gaming, file and printer sharing the best solution is network them.

Here is a good releatively cheap way:
- 2 10/100 Network cards (Netgear are good ones).
- 1 Cat 5 Crossover Network cable
OR
- buy a networking kit such as the Netgear one which will include 2 cards, cables and a hub.

To share your internet connection you need a proxy server of Network Address Translator (NAT):

Ethernet cards cannot act as modem for cable modem, although they are required if you have an external cable modem.

Wake on lan:
I believe this requires support from both the network card and motherboard. They both need to have a wake on lan header that you would connect together.

Well the obvious question is what do you want to do with the computers?
- Transfer small files between them.
- 2 player game network
- both of you share an dialup internet connection
- etc etc
