I ask this because I'm pretty frustrated with them all. I like winamp's playlist editor, and UI....but the sound quality sucks. Sonique is too busy...but I would gladly use it for it's sound quality...but it seams that I have to reload the playlist everytime I start it, and this takes forever, about 30 times longer than winamp. I've tried about 5 other players and they're all just not winamp...but they all sounded better. Is there a better output plugin for winamp out there???

I've been playing around with the windows media player 7 alpha...but it's much too buggy. The beta got released today, but so far I'm hearing it's not a lot better.

I can't fault winamp, I use it every day and I dont have any problems with it except when I overclock my cpu then it crashes every so often. Sonique is good, except it uses whay too much cpu cycles, and it crashes all the time. I can't notice any sound quality differences between the two, probably as I only have a SB PCI 64 card, but the quality is quite good. The windows media player that comes with win98 is good, not very nice interface though. But I'm gonna stick with winamp for now.

I've used winamp as well as realplayer.

I am a musician, and I'd have to say that with mp3's, there is no use trying to eq them... in that area, they will always suck.

But for storing music, practicing harmonies, etc, they rock. That is why I like realplayer the best-easiest to organize, not the temptatino to eq (ever spent 8 hours trying to get a 10 band right? Imagine what i'm like on the road with my dual 31 band for acoustic and electric.... hehe.).

Easy to use, easy to rip, i love it.

Try this Winamp plugin to improve the sound quality. It alows you to turn it on or off in the middle of the sond so you can tell the difference.

Winamp works fine for me.

Yeah, I've tried that on jbob. The sound quality problem is found mostly in symble(sp?) clearity. Also some songs sound distorted...like the speakers are being played too loud. (no, this isn't the case http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif) These problems are much less present, if even perciveable with some other players.

Just tried another player...ear jam. It can rip and burn cd-r's, the sound quality is a little better...but it's bloated and has playlist problems...like it doesn't support m3u playlists. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif

Have you tried Musicmatch Jukebox from www.musicmatch.com (http://www.musicmatch.com) ?
It also rips and writes.

Ok, I think this is what I'm looking for! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Ha, I've even had this on my computer before, but I was just trying out various ripping softwear.

I love this auto dj feature....it's going to take me hours to edit all the tags though!

Maybe I spoke too soon. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif While that's a great, full featured program, I love winamp. I was basicly looking for a winamp clone with better sound quality...I think I found it....Freeamp (http://www.freeamp.org/). I think I've seen it mentioned in some other thread. It's very basic, but it does everything that I want...loads large m3u playlists quickly and provides an easy way to edit them...and plays with better than winamp quality. It doesn't have an EQ to tweak...but that's alright.

I use WinAmp, coupled with the WowThing plugin for unbeatable sound!

I haven't tried that wow thing yet...it's a part of the windows media player 7 beta apparently.

I'll download it...cuz now I see that freeamp is unstable. ARG. I keep opening my mouth too soon.

I use Winamp when I feel like having a pretty mp3 player but I primarily use Music Match Jukebox because it is easier to see and has some more features. To each his own.

I know what you mean by bloat and I go from one player to the other. Strange as it may sound I have come to like the player with napster. It seems to use less cpu power than most. As far as sound quality I don't notice much difference in any of the players. I also use Ultraplayer when I don't use the napster player.

Arg.

Music Match Jukebox
windows media player 7
kjofol
earjam imp
ultra player
freeamp
sonique
xing player
coolplayer

all of them have flaw's that I havn't been able to live with. I'd been so happy with winamp untill I tried sonique on a whim...a song played where I was used to hearing a distorted sound...and it was clear. All that time I thought it was the mp3. And now I hear it in everything and it's driveing me crazy.

I'm going to try Real Jukebox again....I can't remember what I didn't like...but I think it might of been just something to do with the limited ripping options of the free version.
