Hi All,
I have read through some of the problems in this forum that seemed relevant, but the fixes presented have not helped.
I just upgraded a friends PC to a K7VZA with 512Mb, and a Duron 750. He had a P166 before.
I attached the Pentium fan to the new processor, and plugged it in to the Power Supply. I only mention this because therein may lie my problem. There is not a fan plugged into the fan plug on the motherboard, but rather the Pentium fan runs off of the main Power Supply.
Basically, when I turn on the 'new' computer, the mother board beeps (possibly one long beep or four shorter beeps, it is hard to differentiate), and then it shuts down, so I can't even get into the BIOS/CMOS.
I have tried enabling USB as mentioned in one of the other posts. I have tried reseating the Graphics card (ATI Rage II Mach 64 card, or similar). I have set the short jump to clear the CMOS, and left it for a while, and then shorted pins 1 and 2 on JP1 for normal, but I always get the same problems... the beeping, and then shut-down.
I am actually being paid for this upgrade, and was very embarrassed I could not finish.
One last thing, does anyone find it bad that ECS does not include in their motherboard manual a quick list of error codes, and what they relate to?

I re-read my post, and it does seem to be worded in a way that suggests I am not working on this as a priority. I have to get this PC working by mid next week, or I am thoroughly scr&%*d. Pardon the language.
Any help that anyone has (particularly Peter M who seems very clued in on this board!) would be greatly appreciated...
TIA.

Well ... most socket-A mainboards refuse to fire up when they don't detect a rotating CPU fan - for CPU protection purposes. Athlons literally burn out in seconds when not cooled.
Besides, any socket-7 fan/heatsink is WAY too weak for any Duron or Athlon.
Don't try to go cheap here, get a real socket-A fan/heatsink.
regards, Peter

I thought that might be the case... It wasn't me trying to go cheap, it's just that I purchased a boxed deal with the board, 512Mb, and (I thought) a Duron 900 MHz processor. When I found the deal didn't include the processor, I had to run to the nearest store and buy one. I was in a hurry, and so didn't think fan until I got back, in which case I figured the pentium one would do.
I will get a fan tomorrow or Tuesday, and post back to let you know what's up.
It is refreshing to know that motherboards do this, but it would be nice to have some documentation to the fact... In the manual, I mean. Normally, when I purchase and build a PC it is from scratch, and I get all the parts... this time, I was helping my friend minimize costs, and just replacing the important bits... except the fan of course! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
Thanks Peter

Hi All,
I put in the new fan, and it booted up nicely. However, the CD I got with the mobo seems to have missing files, and I can't get the audio to work. I will try the ECS website, unless someone out there has some helpful hints there. Plus, I found out that the OS on this machine is W95, and I can't get the bloody thing to read the HDDs right!
I guess I should post in the OS forum, but it seems to me to be trouble with the mobo drivers, and the CD being wrong.
WHat happens is that W95 starts to P&P the new hardware, and five different devices come up as PCI Card... and that's it! So I have tried various drivers for each, including accepting default... but for one device, I have used Modem, Audio, and Via ide drivers for, and each time it says device is working properly! What is this device? How can I tell?

Have you enabled the Audio in the CMOS?. I use the same Mobo but with WinME and XP

Yes. That was one of the first things I did.
W95 is picking up drivers from a similar type of audio, but they are not working. The reason I have difficulty is that in the directory in which the audio drivers are supposed to be on the mobo CD there is nothing! Under
<CDROM>:\via\AC97Audi
there are no directories (I am supposed to go to: cd-:\via\AC97Audio\Win9x
to access drivers... note the difference in spelling of AC97Audio! This directory with the extra 'o' does not exist on my CD... hence I am worried it is corrupt. I just went to ecsusa.com, and ecs.com.tw, and neither have the driver I need!!! Anyone out there fancy emailing me the driver from their CD-ROM?? It should be an *.inf file.

I have the same problem when i trying to install the drivers provided by the ECS mobo manufacturer...no sound...However I was lucky to have another CD(from another mobo) that has the drivers that actually working. I will mail it to your email account later after I get off from my work. hmm.....about an hours later. Good luck. Dun forget to remove the old driver first before u install the new one.
