I am going to put together my first AMD system and need some recommendations for a decent inexpensive motherboard. This is going to be a system for running ECCp109 and data storage. I would like to have onboard video and LAN, not to concerned with sound. I am getting a slot A 600mHz Thunderbird to install in this system from a friend. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

ABIT KT7A or KT7A-RAID. I have a T-Bird 1Ghz 200FSB running @ 1.4Ghz (10.5 X 133, multiplier unlocked) with default voltage running 101% rock-stable. I've bulit this same configuration for numerous people and not once have I seen problems. I don't know if you have plans to overclock or not, but this mainboard has pretty much all the options you could hope for in an overclocking mainboard! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

NDC, the sites i have seen stated that the KT7A board is a socket A. I need a slot A board. At least thats what my buddy told me it was. From what I have read here at Sysopt, thats the old AMD standard like the Slot 1 Pentium.

I still need cheap with onboard video and LAN.

Oh, so sorry. I misread your post as Socket-A. Sorry. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif Is there a special reason why you want to go with "Slot-A"? Is it because you have a Slot-A processor already?

If it's going to be Slot-A and a T-Bird processor, then the only chipset to do this is AMD's 750. No integrated-VGA chipset was available in slot-A times, and VIA's KX133 chipset doesn't run T-Birds.

So, not much choice. Maybe you can get a leftover PC-Chips M800LMR - this was AMD recommended back then, and despite being ridiculously cheap, it had onboard LAN, 4-channel PCI sound and modem.

Yea, I talked to him this morning and its a slot 1 processor.

Peter do you know where I might be able to find one of those boards. I am using 2 PcChips boards now. Though most cringe at the name I have never had any problems with them. I have searched several times for there boards and have very little luck finding them. The ones I have now were from the Geeks.

No problem with the video I will just get a cheap card.

Thanks,

Don't buy the past board for an antique slot A tbird. These options are pretty cheap, current technology and significantly faster than the 600mhz.

I am planning on building a new system with an athlon 4 cpu. Your configuration seems nice and cheap. Could you please advise the full details? i.e. how to build the system and what settings should I use?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your reply NDC.

How easy is to overclock with this configuration?

NDC

For me, I was able to get the 1Ghz @ 1.4Ghz by unlocking the multiplier and setting it at 10.5 and setting the external clock speed at 133. It wasn't necessary for me to raise the CPU voltage. I've only come across a couple systems which raising the voltage from 1.75 to 1.80 was necessary to stabilize the system...

Are you sure its a T-Bird? I didn't know T_Birds were made at 600 mhz in slot package. I thought all Slot A"s at 600 mhz were classics. I could be wrong though. Whats the # off the top of the case on it?

Thanks NDC,

However I am quite new in overclocking and would some advise how you unlock the multiplier.

regards.

Here's where you can read about unlocking the multiplier on T-Bird Socket-A forms...

I don't have the processor yet. Should have it in a few more weeks. Every thing in the forums seems to be about socket A processors these days. My next personal system will definetly be an AMD system. This box will just be for cracking ECCp109 and nothing else. Just need something cheap and reliable.

Well, after some research I have found a place to buy unlocked AMD Athlons.

ASUS has the K7V-T that runs on the KX-133 VIA Chipset. It will run a Slot A T-Bird up to 1 GIG. I haven't seen one in awhile though. The ASUS K7V is an excellent Slot A board but does not support the Slot A T-Bird very well.
