Hello all. I will be building a new system for myself. I want the motherboard with the following capabilities:
Athlon processor up to 1.4 Ghz
FSB of 200 and/or 266
ATA100
RAM- ? Let's talk about it

I assume that I need to use the new DDR RAM to take full advantage of the system that I want to build. But could I could use standard 168-pin SDRAM and take full advantage?

btw - wrong forum

A ton of motherboards are capable of that. Do you want onboard video/sound/modem?
Do you want DDR or SDRAM or both?
Do you want RAID support?
Do you want an old ISA slot?
How many PCI slots do you need?

A couple quickie recommendations:
Epox 8K7A or '+' version
Epox 8KTA3 or '+' version

I reccomend these SDRAM boards:

ABIT KT7A/KT7A-RAID, KT7-E (if your budget is tight). The EPOX EP-8KTA3...

DDR Boards:

ABIT KG7-RAID/KR7-RAID
and the EPOX EP-8K7A/EP-8K7A+

As for RAM... I am a Micron fan...
Any Micron RAM (PC-133 is preffered for SDRAM and PC-2100 and above is preffered for DDR)
go to this site for RAM www.crucial.com (http://www.crucial.com)
They make RAM from Micron chips. Get at least 256MB

From what I can tell, since AMD made the Alpha EV6 bus, I really dont see the need for DDR. SDRAM does the same thing as DDR as far as I can tell.....

I don't need RAID.
ISA not necessary.
Modem, not necessary.
I would like onboard sound.
AGP slot for video.
At least 4 PCI, I guess would do.

I'm sure most new motherboards will have a lot of this stuff that I don't need. I'm looking to buy a board that has at least what I need, extras are fine as long as the price is reasonable. (I realize I'm being find of vague here)

DDR vs. SDRAM - It seems like boards capable of both are way more expensive than boards with just one capability. It also seems like DDR is more expensive. I already have a ton of SDRAM. Should I just get an SDRAM (to save money), or would I get a significant performance advantage with DDR?

I'll be using the PC for normal internet/email/home use. Plus I do some mid-level web design with light graphic design. The only (system intensive) gaming I do is racing sims. Would it be worthwhile to invest in DDR?

I may even do some slight overclocking (maybe try to get an additional 100mhz,at most, from a 1.2 T-bird)

Have a Look at the Soltek 75KAV (KT133A) chipset. From what you have described this board should do it OK, BUT it ONLY handles SDRAM. If the SDRAM you have is PC133 or more I don't think you will find a huge difference from DDR RAM. I built a very stable system for a friend with a 1.2 Athalon and overclocked it to almost 1.5Ghz (with a FOP 38 cooler) - using FSB overclocking only. The board also comes with onboard sound, and they're cheap here in AUst. ($100 USD)
Check out the web site and reviews, AND make sure they can handle the 1.4G Athlon.
Good Luck!!
