I have a system that i built with kt7 raid. I've been noticing lately the the fan on via norhbrige chip starts to speedup then gives this wining sound. The fan was not doing this after a year or eight months or so. I would like to know is this normal. The fan does this every now and then.

Mine does it too, on a cold start. But after the fan runs for a minute or so the whining stops.

so i guess it is safe to asume that this is normal and that there's nothing to worry about?

Mine started doing that (bearings starting to fail) so I put a Blue Orb on it. I had to "adjust" the mounting holes a bit on the Orb because it's actually designed for video cards and the mounting holes are too far apart.
You could also just purchase a new fan and mount it to the stock heatsink.

yes but kuasi modem , all i want to know is this fan suppose to change speed like that. I don't think theres is anything wrong with the bearing the whining comes as result of the fan turning at a higher speed.

As far as I know, there is no variable speed control for that fan (temperature or otherwise). That's why I replaced the fan.

well..this is what i'll do..i'll leave it as is for now. if it starts to get worse or really bad then i'll change the fan...righ now it's really not that bad. by the way, why didn't you replace the fan with one similar on your system?

also i will email abit about this to varify if this fan is varieable speed.

as far as I can remember this is a know fault of the fans that a-bit used over the northbridge.
I'm on my 3rd board, the first I changed because the fan started screaming after only 4 weeks. This one I have had since november and the fan is quite, wish I could say the same for the Blue Orb I put on my Video card made more noise than all the other fans put together.
I think there maybe something on this over at the KT7 FAQ http://www.viahardware.com/faq/kt7/kt7faq.htm

are you saying that this is the fault of the particular fan abit is been using on this board? and you also change the board three times over the same problem? seems like this is really an issue.
thanks for the link GREOBHTA, i will definelty check it out.

I used the Blue Orb to increase cooling on the FSB, just to see how far I can push it for overclocking. Right now my FSB is at 105 and stable.
I'm trying to design a heatsink for the clock chip so that I can get more than 110 out of it (I'd like to get 144/34 out of it, if I can).

I had the same problem on my KT7. You can fix the whinning sound by removing the fan and putting a drop or two of oil in the bearing. Remove the sticker to access the bearing. I use synthetic motor oil, seems to work very well. No more whinning.

i'll give it a shot flipchip but can the label on the fan be replace after removal?....and also have you been noticing changes in the rev. of the fan before you oiled the bearings

i just thought of something flipchip. it seems to me that if you apply oil to the bearings, the oil may eat away on the plastic.
