I have a BCM QS440bx with award bios ver. 2.03 (20540203.bin) Need to update bios to install a bigger than 32 gig HD. Tried to install the latest version downloaded from BCMs website ver.2.09 (54020900.bin) I get "Insufficient Memory" message. On floppy I have the bin. file, awdflash.exe, and command.com Am I still doing something wrong? Any input would be appreciated.

First of all, how much physical memory do you have on your system? Have you also tried making a clean DOS boot disk? Windows 98 boot disks have device command lines... To get a clean DOS boot, do the follwing.

Method 1:

Put a floppy disk in the drive and go to the DOS prompt and type format a: /s. After the format is completed, it will contain the necessary bootable files to the floppy disk. Just copy the BIOS update file and FLASH utility to that floppy disk.

Method 2:

rename the autoexec.bat & config.sys file to a different name so that the command lines won't load any devices...

Thanks for the information NDC. I created a system disk in DOS just like u said. The only file on it was Command.com. Copied flash utility and bios file onto the floppy. Did the same thing. Says "Starting Windows 98" just before the C prompt comes on. Perhaps there is more to this system file than there should be. It is 92k in size. Does that seem kinda large for a system file?

For Win98 COMMAND.COM 91.6K 5/11/98

What to do when the Award flasher says: Insufficient memory
In CMOS Chipset Features Setup, Disable Video BIOS Cacheable.

Hit Esc, F10, Save and exit.

Reboot and hit Ctrl+F5 when you see "Windows Starting" (This temporarily prevents Drvspace.bin from loading, freeing 108K RAM.)

Flash the BIOS and reboot.

Enter CMOS Chipset Features Setup, enable Video BIOS Cacheable, Esc, F10, Save and reboot.
SUCCESS!!!!!!!
Stopping the "drivespace.bin" from loading did the trick. My motherboard is now running the very latest version (3 versions up) of bios. Now it should detect my new Western Digutal 40 gig 7200 rpm hard drive. HOORAY!!
Thank you Gentlemen for the information.

Have a GREAT DAY!!!
