i just killed my p3BF.(i think) first time ive killed a board and ive built quite a few systems.
funny thing is, i only plugged it in from the rear. the power cord that is. i think i heard a small popping noise. now all i get is a very high pitched (dog-like) whining noise when i plug it in. i narrowed it down to 2 things i believe. cpu or motherboard. this has been up and running for quite some time now. not sure if asus will give me a warranty. have to call them again. sent one back a while ago that was dead out of the box actually. i took it(present board) out of the case,(hoping for a short in the case) removed every card including video and memory. nothing. even tried a different power supply to no avail although the voltages werent exact. i gotta find my tester to check it out first. i might just get a power supply which isnt that expensive and go from there. 35-40 bux wont kill me. at least it will help. any other ideas? just curious. i mean i tried all, reseting cmos, praying, pretending it didnt happen(obviously ive done things that have nothing to do with the problem like cmos!!).....but, it did. oh well, i'll see what happens. i also know id have to track another p3bf down at pricewatch considering they stopped making them. i also wil try my p3700@ a friends house tomorrow.(he has the same boards luckily). why did i post? i dont know, just looking for a prayer. any ideas are welcome also. thanx.

It sounds like you have the problem under control. I would have suspected the power supply first, but it could be the motherboard. It's pretty strange that it would die like that from plugging the power in! I had one of those boards for over a year and had no problems at all.

At work I see mainly motherboards going bad before the power supply. Mostly because the motherboards we use at work are really old and they are junk. The biggest problem we have with power supplies is that the fans sieze up after a while, probably due to dust.

Good luck with your motherboard!

I think most motherboards die first than PS. I still have a 250w ps from 1995 and it's alive and kicking giving life to a Celeron 300a @ 450mhz.

Your problem is really freaky.! Did you connected the power switch into the motherboard and the m/b just died? If there was no power traveling thru the cables when you connected it, that is not supposed to happen.....

Well try your cpu at your friend house and let us know what happened.!

as expected the board, or something attached to the board is dead. i hooked it up with my cpu and memory directly to my friends case, powered it on and voila! nothing. no lights, nada. took out my cpu, slapped it in his machine and it booted up fine(with his board) and showed as a 700.
wish i could say it was my fault that this happened but i dont think so.
so now i will call asus and hopefully get an RMA number with no problem. i dont think this is a year old. at least i hope not. gotta track dowm the receipt. i bouth this at a trade show. oh well.........

Eagle 1: what i did was connect the power supply cord into the back of the case(power supply).
thats it.

Is it an ATX case? If it is, I hope you know that you are suppossed to connect the cable while it's not connected to the plug in the wall.!

I damaged a PS unit this way. I think that ATX PS always stay on (or something like that) so this will cause a lot of problems.!
