I just upgraded my system using this MB. Before shutting down to set it up I disabled all programs that run at boot up. Renamed my Autoexec.bat and verified that I did NOT have a config.sys with anything in it. Removed all system devices and HD's from within device mangler. Then I shut down and swapped components.
Now when my system boots it posts fine, updates config items fine, and then just HANGS at the point where the splash screen would normally come up. I can get into safe mode. And i can not figure out what driver is killing it. I have reinstalled Win ontop of itself, but would rather NOT have to do a clean install.
Any Ideas?

OK an update:
I could not get Win 98 to run in standard mode. I removed all .dat, .da0, and 1st files. And it still presented the same issues. I attempted to install WIN ME on top. This got me into Windows. But I am STILL hanging once I am in. It seems as if it is hanging after about 3 min of Windows load. It seems in particular that it will freeze whenever there is a lot of HD access. I have set all my memory settings to the most conseservative settings. I have removed all cards not necessary for the operation of the system. I have left only my primary HD in place (this used to be my secondary, and I thought based on the errors that it could have been a flaky drive so I swapped them). A scandisk (from a boot disk)shows NO errors. All drivers are the correct drivers for the system. I have NO idea what i can do at this point.

HELP!! I need my system back!

OK a further update.
I have reinstalled both 98 and ME (seperately) on a freshly formatted HD. My system is still presenting the same issues. I am able to boot to Windows safe mode, but NOT windows standard mode in MOST cases. I AM able to boot to standard mode if I change the resolution for my display adapter (from safe mode) to VGA graphics. This Vid card has worked with other systems, and I was able to simply plug it in and go on one other system.

I an sure I am using the correct drivers.
Could the AGP/PCI bus on the MB be bad? Thoughts? I'm about ready to toss the MB in the trash!

I would bet money on it being your video card and motherboard combo being incompatible. I had the same issues with an Asus Super Socket 7 MB(model number has slipped my mind) and the ATI Rage Pro 128w/32MB card. I went as far as even sending the card back to ATI, with the same results. There was a mention of the issue at Asus, and that it was covered in a bios upgrade, but I had the upgrade, along with the latest updates to the chipset and AGP controler...... blah blah blah. No luck, and lockups galore.

Solution was dumping the card for an old Voodoo 3000 and things were cool.... LOL!

Hope this helps.

Have you tried, change to the standard vga drivers, get your system up and running, then install the video drivers while windows is up and running?? After you install the video drivers, the system will reboot, if the system does this, it would seem that you are good to go.

One other thing, have you set the video to AGP in bios?? After you get the system to post you should set all items in bios before you allow windows to completely load. Your info is confusing, do you have an ASUS A7M266 mobo, or the A7V266??

Yes I have set it to standard VGA in windows, and then rebooted. Then in Win installed the correct drivers for the vid card. Upon reboot it again fails to get into Win.

And yes in the BIOS I have it set to AGP first. I have also tried AGP 2X & 4X settongs as well as auto.

Well I tried dropping in an older Creative Riva TNT (PCI 16 meg version). This allowed me to change the vid resolution (yay no more 16 color), but I still can't get any drivers other than the MS drivers to install! Even the drivers from the Creative site that are certified don't work. And the Drivers that are included are only good for Direct Draw 1.0! Looks like I'm stuck.
