I need to order a P3 board tonight and need some recommendations! The guy has a Gateway "book" type computer with a P3 733 and decided to expand! I'll salvage the drivers and CPU, but this AMD dude needs some help on selecting a mainboard.

Thanks http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Randy48-
Hi
I am running an ABIT VP6, with a single 933 P3, 256 RAM, ATI Rage 2000, SBL 5.1/3MP and a 3com model. I use for home/business with W2Pro. I didn't implient the raid, didn't understand it so simply connected two IBM 40 Gb HDD to the HPT370 as normal drives plus a WD 40 Gb as my C drive. I have had very little trouble with it. It has the VIA 133A PRO chips in it. I have read that there were some problems with the video using the A chips, but I haven't had any. I have read and have thought of doing the ABIT SA6R which uses the Intel 815e chip. It appears to be stable and reliable. I'm not into games and OC, so I don't have much trouble.

The reason I took the dual chip socket is that I understand that they get a closer quality and tighter controls during manufacturing. I am a big believer in HEAVY DUTY! Just a thing with me. Means quality and will last longer (normally) If I can answer more questions let me know. Good luck in your selection. Jim

I built 2 P-III800EB PCs. ABIT VH6/VH6-II highly recommended for P-III if you do not overclock the CPU. Inexpensive, reliable and easy to do.

Kinda funny....
I too have an Abit VP6 which has given me no troubles. I also dont use second Processor (yet) nor the RAID. I bought it because it ws only a few dollrs more than the Asus I was looing at.

I too, have just ordered 2 more VH6's after having used them before with no probs..

I think this post is too late though.

I havent had any problems with these Abit boards;
VP6 (in my main sys at home)
BE6-II ( in my wifes)
Bh6 ( in my sons, 5 at work)
VH6 (1 at home, 4 at work)
VL6 (2 currently at work, 2 more on their way)

The Asus p2b 's at work also have given me no grief

A good one to use if you want to use them for a LAN rig it the GVC/BCM GT693VA. I've been usuing it a long time, and had no probs (except it isn't great for oc'ing CPU's).

Here is a quick run down...
slot one CPU socket (supports of to 1Ghz)
3 Dimm sockets (supports 768MBs mem)
1 AGP (2X http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif
3 PCI
1 ISA
onboard Sound Blaster 64 with game port (easily disabled in the bios)
And a slew of other stuff! What I really like about it is it can fit into a Micro ATX case for LAN parties! As soon as I upgrade my current setup to a Athlon. I'm making a LAN rig out of it!

If your looking for a normal home rig. I would suggest one of the mobos the other guys or gals have been suggesting!

Have fun! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
