I have been trying to bring some new life to some old AT computers via CPU and Board upgrades. When I try to use drives, cables, and RAM tested in an ASUS P5A (ATX form factor) within the ASUS P5A-B(AT Form factor) the system becomes totally unstable.
SYMPTOM: system lockups with Windows 98 and Windows 2000 with the loading of SYSTRAY, accessing anything within the control panel, installation of software, or within the first 10 minutes of operation. These lockups are total and all hot-key combinations including ALT-TAB, CTRL-ESC, and CTRL-ALT-DEL fail to respond.
PUZZLE: When replacing the RAM, CPU, drives and drive cables onto a P5A they work fine.
Jumpers are set correctly on both the P5A and P5A-B boards. The problem produces identical results with all the Asus P5A-B board I have tested.
I'm stumped and can only think that there is some basic board-case incompatibility. Any thoughts would be apreciated.
