Several months ago, we purchased a Gateway computer with a 750 MHz AMD Athlon processor. However, the prices of AMD CPUs keep coming down and we are interested in upgrading the CPU to something a little faster.
We have contacted Gateway Technical Support on several occasions to find out if this motherboard will support a faster chip. The documentation for this motherboard is terrible. They finally informed us that it should support up to a 1 GHz AMD Athlon Processor. However, they would not give us any other information on the motherboard.
Does anyone know if this motherboard will support a 1 GHz chip or is the maximum speed the motherboard will support 950 MHz?
In addition, we have read that a BIOS update might be required if we update the CPU. The only place that we can find this motherboard listed is on the Gateway site. They would not tell us if we would need to update the BIOS.
The current version of BIOS that we have is 0AASNP05. Does anyone know if this BIOS will support a 950 MHz or 1 GHz processor?

I just spoke with Gateway regarding a PC I am working on for my Mother. I contacted Tech. support and asked them to specify what MHz the board supported since there description on there website was so general. Also, I asked them about there BIOS updates, what exactly are they updating. They gave a brief description of what the BIOS update did and told me what processor's the motherboard would support. Just keep talking with them. They will eventually give you the info. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

Did you talk with them on the phone or through email support? I have been contacting them through Email because I seem to wait forever on the phone before I can talk with someone in person.
Maybe I need to call them.

Sweeper,
You must have emailed the right individual at gateway.
--------------------------------------------
As for me, I am about to give up. After emailing Gateway Technical Support and
asking them the same questions over and over, I have learned nothing. I now have ten emails from them that do not really answer any of my questions.
They did, however, tell me to call the Gateway Add-on sales department and whomever I spoke with should be able to tell me which processors could be used with this motherboard.
Anyone else have any suggestions?

Here is the e-mail's and responses:
I am looking to upgrade the CPU on this system. First I need
to know what the highest CPU this system will support. Second I would
like to know how much ram can I upgrade to.
Thank you

Thank you for using Gateway's Online Technical Support. I see you are
looking for the specifications to update/upgrade the system. Here is a
link to your motherboard specifications and available upgrades.

Thank you for the response. Although the page shows alot of information regarding the motherboard it does not how ever tell me what MHz I can go up to regarding the CPU.

The system board supports several processor speeds and has a 66 MHz host bus speed. If the processor is upgraded, the speed settings may need to be changed.
I looks as though it will only support Celeron processor's which I understand, but what is the rated MHz. The above statement is very general. I would rather buy a processor which I know the motherboard supports than have to be stuck with one that it doesn't support. If I get the wrong speed and try to return it I will be stuck with a restocking fee.
Also, I noticed there has been a BIOS upgrade made available for the Motherboard. I was wondering what the BIOS upgrade changes. For example: "support for the new Celeron II CPU's, etc."
Thank you,

Thank you for your e-mail. I understand you are wanting information
about BIOS information.
Intel Celeron Socket 370/ 366 400 450 475, so you can only go as high as
475mhz.
Thank you.

Ok, I am a bit confused. According to Intel they only made:
400 433 466 500 533 MHz Celeron processors in that voltage line. In the reply I got it was stated [quote] Intel Celeron Socket 370/ 366 400 450 475, so you can only go as high as
475mhz..[quote] Intel never made a 475 Celeron? Can someone please clear this up so I can purchase the correct CPU.
Thank you,

Thank you for your e-mail. I understand you are wanting information
about on processors for your motherboard.
Your motherboard will only see upto 475mhz of processor speed.
More processor information:
The motherboard supports a single Intel Celeron 370-pin processor with a
66-megahertz (MHz) host bus. Processors with a 66-MHz host bus can be
used with either 66- or 100-MHz synchronous dynamic RAM (SDRAM). The
processor's VID pins automatically program the motherboards voltage
regulator to the required processor voltage. In addition, the host bus
speed, 66 MHz, is selected automatically.
Thank you.

Spoke with them thru e-mail. They gave me some very general responses at first but I kept on asking till I got the answer I needed.

Yes, your current BIOS revision will support the 950MHz Athlon and I believe it will also support the 1GHz as well. If not, the next BIOS rev should take care of that deficiency.
