friends:

This ever happen to you?

I was changing hs/fan on Iwill KK266 and before any real pressure was applied buckling the hs down, the center "stub" that the hs assembly hooks onto broke! Ahh! What a STUPID design, not just Iwill, but all Socket A/462 manufacturers! A socket made of a more durable material or for better stress distribution would make sense...

I'm sending for a new mobo (as I need one for my business) and I'll return the broken one to Iwill who best fix the broken socket gratis!

Grr! And rant!

There are posts everywhere about the tabs on socket A boards breaking off. These tabs made onto the sockets were never designed to take the stress of these new heavy duty heatsink spring locking devices. Many have broken off after the system was up and running, and the heatsink fell off...instantly killing the processor. So, consider yourself lucky that it broke when it did. By the way, the motherboard manufacturers are now designing in 4 holes around the socket for board mounted heatsinks, to get away from the socket spring loaded types. The Swiftech MC462 is one of them. Go look at it, and consider a different way to attach the heatsink.

You can buy it here, complete with fan, or buy just the sink assy without the fan, and add your own fan, or get whatever fan you want. It takes an 80mm fan. It is probably one of the best sinks available at this time.

Thx, Bovon. I'm checking out the links you provided.

I ordered a Swiftech 462 with the incredibly loud Delta fan and a seperate 80mm fan that's 10dbs quieter as the optional rheostats (sp) to slow/speed up the loud fans are backordered till June! Fortunately my Iwill KK266 has the 4 mounting holes in it and match up to the online template. I'll never put a "clamp on" hs/fan assembly on a cpu again! Another bonus is I discovered my T-Bird is from the AXIA-Y (1999) batch.

Breaking the tab myself instead of the hs/fan assembly breaking off by itself was likely a lucky break. I could have fried my cpu. The plastic socket "tab" was very brittle.

Thx again!
