I have built a system using Gigabyte Super & Series GA-5aa with AMD K6-2/450. It tries to boot, Checks memoery, sees hard drive CD rom and hangs up. Error message displayed is Ultra DMA Mode 2 S.M.A.R.T. Capable but dis able any help would be appreciated

That's not the error message that hangs it - that's not even an error message.

It hangs while determining the CDROM's detail parameters. AMI-BIOS first detects drive types, and then revisits each drive for the details. Your HDD is capable of Self Monitoring And Report Technology, but you set BIOS up to not use it, that's all the message says. It should write the CDROM's drive name next, it doesn't, so I guess that's where it hangs. Try setting the CDROM to "CDROM" instead of "Auto" on the Standard Setup page.

Well, then after the IDE drive detection, it initializes PCI and PnP add-on cards, and then starts their ROMs. Got a SCSI, IDE or network card in there?

Can you reset the bios to a default position?...like maybe factory default. I can't remember the options now, and I'm not going to reboot right now to go look. You also can reset the bios to default by the mainboard jumper for this, or by pulling the battery out for 10 to 15 minutes.

Will try removing battery and see what happens

Removing batery did reset but it still hangs.
It does detect HDD and CDROM drive. Also light on floppy stays on. Have checked cable, connections and all is good. All equipment is new this is the first power for everything I am using

I have also tried both bios default and setup default

Forget the bios for a minute, what's your OS?
Oh, & are the IDE devices run through a controller card, or plugged into the board directly?

Well, if the drives are detected by main system BIOS, then they're on the mainboard's controllers.

And if the floppy light stays on, no wonder it hangs there. Connect the FDD cable the right way round, please.

Just enter the BIOS and go to the Standard BIOS featuresa nd see for an option sayin S.M.A.R.T Hard Disk.. U can toggle it ON or OFF and its OFF by default.. Just set it to ON. Also change ur BOOT sequence to A,C,CDROM and see if it acceses ur Floppy drive after the POST. If it does and Boots via a bootable disk then run scandisk or somethin on ur Hard Disk to see if its ok and the BOOT record is fine. Also if this does'nt work then there is a possibilty that ur BIOS is not configured properly. Set it to Optimal or Failsafe Settings and then try.
Hope that Helps http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

hi,
have you made sure cpu / bus settings are correct? clock speed set incorrectly has caused "strange" cmos errors

Could be a bad board, I had the same problem with the GA5AX board, it would only run on a 66 fsb @ 200 or 231 mhz and that was with a K62 450. Changed the board and it solved the problem. I was told the fault was with the onboard L2 cache, it is now running a K62+500 @ 550 and 600 if I up the voltage to 2.1 volts.
Drop the fsb to 66 and try a 3X multiplier (200 mhz) and see if it boots, if it does then try a 100 fsb same multiplier (300 mhz) and I bet your problem will return.
Hope this helps,
Bob.

Have checked and rechecked all cables for polarity also jumpers connectors. The only card I have inserted is a agp needed for monitor. Have followed all the previous suggestions to no avail. Now the bios seems to be going crazy as I scroll through selections I lose the cursor completly and have to re-boot to get back to bios. Also the S.M.A.R.T. selection does not show as such in my bios settings
