What mobo should I get?

Considering upgrading my system by replacing my Celeron 600 with an AMD Athlon T-bird 1GHz 200FSB. This will of course require me to get a new motherboard for the AMD. What board is the best buy for around $200?

I've been researching the same question. You can find lots of opinions at the several other threads that ask the question.

Right now the Iwill KK266 has my eye if I elect to stay with PC133 SDRAM.

The new Shuttle AK32 takes either SDR or DDR memory and is very attractive for its overclocking convenience.

The most popular OC boards for T-Bird is an Abit KT7A series and ASUS A7V series.

I recommend the Abit KT7A-RAID, you can get it for around $150 plus shipping. I got my KT7-RAID from these guys, wish I had waited a couple weeks and gotten the "A" model.

PS - They also have the non-RAID version for a bit less, but you will like the extra IDE ports, I'm running two harddrives and DVDROM and CDRW, each one on their own IDE channel as masters.

I am a rank ameture at all this, but I too have been driving myself crazy the last three weeks trying to figure out what to get for my dream machine.

So far I have purchased:

ANTEC SX1240 full tower case w/400 power supply.

Swiftech MC462-A Heatsink (one at first but will need 2 eventually)

2 256MB (512MB) sticks of PC2100 Crucial DDR-SDRAM

Waiting for an AMD 1.4 266 TBird CPU (one at first but will need 2 eventually)

Here's the kicker... I think I am going to go for the gold on this one and get a dual cpu mobo, either the TYAN Thunder K7 or K7X (once I fugure out the difference). www.2cpu.com (http://www.2cpu.com)

I know I don't need it but I do WANT it... and just think how COOL it will be!

Hell, if you only get one CPU at first it's not that much more expensive.

Unfortunatly it seems I'll have to wait...I'm gonna wait until I get a job and just build a whole new box from scratch. Since this will be over a year from now, I'm counting on getting at least a 2Ghz with 400Mhz fsb http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif heheh....I don't have the 1000 bucks to get a new box now...I don't even have the 400 to upgrade to 1Ghz. And I want additional computers! Heheheh.
