Greetings,

I've been pouring over the posts & archives and gotten lots of great information on getting a K6-2 to run on a M571. However, I'm not having much luck. I've got a v7.0a board with the 4/21/99 bios, two 64K PC100 DIMMS, and a K6-2/500 (which replaced my K6-2/300) running Win95. Though the 300 ran fine with only 64K slow SIMMS, I can't get the 500 to reliably do even 366 (5.5x66). It posts OK, but when Win95 is starting, I keep getting a message that says "While initializing device IOS. Windows protection error. You must restart your computer."
I've never seen this message before and have no idea what it means. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. THANKS VERY MUCH!!!!!

A "windows protection error" means that while windows was trying to load a driver for one of the hardware devices, it ran into a problem that windows thought would cause it to crash or be unstable. So, instead of starting up, it tells you to reboot so that i can try again. If the reboot does not work, then boot into "safe mode" and go into your system configuration. Look at the properties on all of your add on cards and your disk drives. Check the box that says disable in this profile, or something close to that. That means that the next time your reboot, windows will not load the drivers for those devices. When you reboot and windows boots successfully in normal mode, go back into system configuration and uncheck one or two of the devices so that windows will load that driver on the next reboot. Continue this process until you get the windows protection error again. Once you have narrowed it down to a specific device that is causing the problem, try uninstalling it and reinstalling with some newer drivers. Hope this was not too confusing. Good luck!

Lemme guess, that's Windows 95, ain't it? If yes, then that's a well known and long forgotten http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif bug in a handful of MS drivers. Go back to 300 MHz, download the fixed drivers from Microsoft, install them, and then enjoy at higher speeds.

Note that not too many people had good luck with older revisions of the SiS 5598 chipset and AMD K6-2 at 83 MHz bus. See first whether yours works fine at low speeds like 3.5x 83 MHz first, to rule out that kind of problem.

PROBLEM SOLVED. The AMD K6-2 patch worked like a charm. I'm now running at a full 500Mhz (83*6) without any problems. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!!!!!
