I can implement a spell checker like this one:
http://www.spellchecker.net/board/cgi-bin/pos tings.cgi?action=reply&forum=SpellChecker&number=1&topic=000001.cgi&TopicSubject=HI! (http://www.spellchecker.net/board/cgi-bin/postings.cgi?action=reply&forum=SpellChecker&number=1&topic=000001.cgi&TopicSubject=HI!)

...but would anyone use it?

I would. I'm constantly jumping to an online dictionary or to my email account (which does a spellcheck when I compose a new message).

I know I would sure use it Scott,
it would come in real handy for those words that I have to look up anyway. I was using a third party spell checker for awhile, but didn't like the memory overhead, so I went back to cut and paste into Word or WordPerfect, a time consuming and clumsy process.
This looks like it would be a very nice feature to have, count me in! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
Thanks,

We put it on our BB and I love it... Problem is that those that really should use it never do.
Still it's not hard to implement and I feel it would be a good edition to this great board http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

hd581, you do the exact same thing I do. I go to Merriam Webster's too. Only problem is, spelling-wise, you gotta be pretty close.

It would be good but would it give the correct spelling or the American spelling http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gifJ/k

I must say that it would come in very handy, when you have a spellchecker like that.

But don't forget, there are also a lot of people who type some words faulty, like ya instead of you.

Just my thought on the subject.

BTW, I probably would only use it when really needed, because, I don't want to brag or something, but I'm pretty good at spelling.
Or so people have told me, and I am not even from a English talking country.

not all UBB's use spell check. I have found a neat spell checker, that's free..overhead is minimal:
spell check for edit boxes (http://www.quinion.com/mqa/index.htm)

Warthog

I'd use it. I'm always opening MS Word to spell check.

It would be very handy, some times it can get messy when trying to convert from English ( Oxford Uni. Dic. Version ) to American. E.G. Colour=Color and so forth, after all if we use an American based site we should at least try to use the local language. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

Why not go a little further... When,if, you hit the " Submit reply" button, there are mispelled words, the spell checker automatically is implimented and the post does not get entered until all the spelling was correct. Educational as well as functional!!! Then we could have an interBBS
spelling bee and we'd win hands down!!! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

I like pickel's idea. Even if we had a spell checker, if we had to do it ourself most of us wouldn't bother. I know I probably wouldn't. Hotmail has a spell checker... I used it maybe twice when I first noticed it about two years ago and haven't touched it since. It should just point out the errors though. Holding the message until the errors are corrected is a bad idea, since there are a lot of words (brand names, for example) that would not be recognized.

I vote yes to spell checker. Whenever I send email or use MS Word I use the spell checker to clean up my work and think it would be a great addition to this bulletin board.

BTW... did I spell bulletin corectly ??, cause it looks kinda funny to me.

I really don't think it is that big of a deal. I know I misspell words all the time and I really don't care. A spell checker would be nice, and I would use it. We are sharing technical information about computers to one another. This is not an english or book writing BBS. I used to be really good at spelling when I was younger, but since the computer era I rely on spell checkers all the time. I often find it difficult to spell simple words, and I don't care. I am going to be in a science or computer field and it just isn't that important. Any important written correspondence that I will do will be spell checked first before I send it. Also I often type replies in a hurry. It is not like we are writing dissertations or anything. What is the big deal?

I support the spell checker but I dont believe it will make much of a difference. I believe most peoples spelling problems are because they are lazy (me too). These people wont use the spell checker anyway. All people have to do is read the post once before submitting it.

I for one probley has the most misspelled words out there. and since I have been out of school for almost 30 years. I think it is a little to late for the checker. I use it to send importaint letters to business contacts. but, that is it.

I just type it the way I say it. and since most of you all are going to collage in one way or another. you should be able to figure out what I'm trying to say. if not, than you should still be in high school!!!

what we really need is "for me" is a price bidder to hit on the for sale items. when I'm away.

I'm not saying I wouldn't use it "sometimes" but, than again I'm not saying I would use it either. so, what I'm trying to say is this.

I sign on to the bbs the first time. and I see all the perfect grammer ect. and I say to myself. ****, better find me another bbs. this one is way to upper class for me.

but, than again. it could be usefull for the ones. that here lately have been ""crying"" off topic "please close thread". they could do something usefull with there time and correct all our misspelled words.

or we could have a contest to see who has the most correct or misspelled words in a post. and for the prize we could make them the offical "word monitor" kinda like the french fries monitors.
down at the fast food places. as I call them.

so, I guess what the heck. give it a try. it might help us to better ourselves

ok, I now have a different outlook. and feel it is time to take a vote. so post your votes here.

I have looked at this **** dictionary the last time. and am tired of useing other words to say what I want. because I'm to lazy to look them up. or I in a hurry to say something.

my mind moves faster than my hands do. and I hit the wrong key. trying to keep up.

so, I say give it a try. but, put it over to the right of the submit box or something. I was on another bbs that had one. and keep hitting it instead of the send box. they had it first on the left. where the submit box was before. I mean learn me to spell. not to learn the boxs all over again.

Vote:YES
