I was wondering what antivirus program everyone uses.I have norton systemworks 2000 not installed on this computer because I heard it slows the system down alot. Can I install systemworks and just leave the antivirus on and uninstall everything else?I'm using a free antivirus for now called inoculateit is this ok to use and how good is it towards norton antivirus?

I've got Norton Antivirus Version 2.0 for win95, its yonkers old but I update it about once a month for all the latest definitions. It slows my system down slightly on bootup but its worth it. I have used it ever since I had to recover from a Win95CIH virus. It does actually work when it runs in the background because it popped up a window once when I put an infected disk in my floppy drive and cleaned it for me.

AVs:
NAV5.01.01C for Win98 (don't forget to update your inline patches - those aren't included in the virus defs) www.symantec.com (http://www.symantec.com)
AVP Toolkit Pro Platinum v3.9 build 131 http://www.avp.com/
Trojans:
Jammer v1.95 build 0811
Currently trying Tauscan from the same site. http://www.agnitum.com/
I also have TDS (Trojan Defense System) http://tds.diamondcs.com.au/ installed, but find it a bit buggy on some features.
SpyWare:
OptOut http://grc.com/optout.htm
Also, the payload date for Chernobyl is coming up - make sure you're protected.

Norton 2000 gives you the option when you install it to only have the AV and crashgaurd set to autorun, after the install you can turn off crasgaurd perminatly. I think they call the choice something like "manually protect system". I happen to like and use some of the other features in System Works, I just only want them on when needed. Actually, I think they did this on the 2000 version for just this reason, they even give options to turn off the splash screens.
Dave
Edit- BTW, I don't notice any slowdown with just the AV running. There must be a little, but a good AV is necessary in my opinion. -edit

Innoculate IT, from Computer Associates, free , download, registration, free (regular) updates for life, fast, small program, very easy to configure, doesn,t "take over" your system like some of the big names. Free home version of a very good professional program.

I have the exact same version NAV and download virus defs at least weekly if not sooner.
I went to www.symantec.com (http://www.symantec.com) to find the "inline patches" that you refer to, didn't have any luck in finding them. Could you point me in the right direction so that I can be sure that I get these too.
I appreciate it.
Thanks,

Now I use pc-cillan, came with asus board. I used norton for a few years, did not bother installing sys works part, but I did like AV. Like prev mentioned, you could just install AV!

Thanks for the info socalgal on the inline patches.I have Norton system works 2.0 with nav 5.0.I only have the antivirus loaded from the cd.I went to download the inline patches and when I ran the setup it said IT could not detect norton antivirus 4.0 deluxe or 5.0 so it wouldn't let me update the patch.Help socalgal???

stppetty,
I just had the exact same problem in trying to upgrade. I have Norton System Works with Norton AntiVirus 5.0.
I downloaded the 12MB inline patch and tried to use it, but it informed me that it could not find 4.0 Delux or 5.0
Hmmmm, well I finally figured it out.
I had already downloaded the patch some time ago, so I really had version 5.01.01a (but didn't realize it).
The patch was none the wiser and would not update an already updated version.
Try going to NAV Help/About and check what exact version you have, you may also have updated it and forgotten like I did. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/redface.gif
I hope this helps.

ewwww............that is nasty AVP is only about 3 megs........bout 6 megs with the control center installed(you do not need the control center unless you are running a network)
I found nortons to be a massive resource whorg...............figgin bloatware.....did not even find certain viri that AVP found in some tests that I ran.........

Yea,
ROFLMAO
I was't sure I wanted to admit that I wasted about 2 hours time trying to update a program that didn't need updating, but it's for the good of trying to save someone else the trouble. (At least I'm really really sure what version I have now) LOL http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

Oblivion - you have hit a key note with me, close to my heart! I fully agree with you there. There should not be any need for an AVP to massively invade your system the way Norton does. I don't care for anything Norton anymore.
I am still very happy with PC-cillin 6 and the free online updates. My system does not seem to be slowed by it in the least unless I turn on the startup scan - and even then it is only for a moment.

Chainsaw OR SOCALGAL I have version 5.01.03 is this the latest. If it is then it did download thru the live update because I just loaded it onto my new computer tonight off the CD and did one live update. The system works is about 7 months old.???What is an inline patch????Thanks again.
i am running norton antivirus 7.01 and find it acceptable for most applications, but it never hurts to have a couple of virus scanners as they all seem to get virus updates at different times

PC Magazine just did a review article on antivirus programs. Norton still beats the competition. The performance hits are also included in the article. Some programs use less system resources but miss viruses or halt good macros. I will take the slight performance hit to be safer.

PC ciliian is good...........
Cmonster.............AVP is not the least bit resource hogging...it is very small and efficient............in fact AKAIK all the hackers use it as thier top choice.......
It is just not as popular here because it is made in russia.......it is gaining recognition though.

I agree with oblivion and cmonster that norton software normally takes up alot of resources.
I have been using mcafee for alot of years and don't have any complaints (and also never any virus attack)
lets face it .... the best virus protection is common sense

I'll second that, ytay!!
You don't want to be an information "hypochondriac", but there are times when discretion has to outweigh curiosity ("I wonder what's in that attachement"?).
An antivirus program is only as good as the database coverage, and there are crafty nuts out there writing malicious code day-in and day-out. You've got to keep on top of things...don't put yourself in a compromising position (to accept questionable materials), have an antivirus program that scans all incoming files, have a staging area on your disk (perhaps even a separate data partition) that you accept downloads into and scan, always scan EVERY floppy that you insert into your system, etc.
It gets to be a pain-in-the-***, but if you make it a routine, the results are excellent. This is the habit that large corporations with successful antivirus deployment instill in their employees to stay "microbe free".
BTW, I use McAffee and check the virus data base every week for possible upload fro new coverage. And I use the prophylactic measures described previously, and haven't (knock on wood) had a virus infection yet.
Good luck...

You're right, ytay but I still use AVP just in case. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif Amazingly, I have yet to be confronted with any virus on my own system.

I agree with yatay, the best defense against viruses is common sense and a routine back up system.

I do this............(it make the most sense to me)....when DLing anything that may be or a shady nature.......I scan it before and after I open it (meaning I scan zips twice)..........AVP is such that is can and will detect a virus as soon as it is in the system.....of unzipped to sometimes.................I have tried them all.....many times..and AVP is the best IMO.......nortons and even mcaffe are bloatware....and disgusting as well.......anything over 6 megs is a waste and a system hog............
So I do use common sense...........all the times I can...............I have had some nasty viri that were gotten rid of.......
Now I never really get any.....
