I know that I am a bit behind time wise with this post, but I admit these problems are similar to mine. I am using a AMD K6-2/550 and receive these errors within 98 and ME. I have the latest bios (ME pci/isa fix) and the latest VIA drivers.

Problem:

When set at 550/PC-66 -(unstable)crashes with vxd, explorer, and other memory type errors. My only fix is to underclock the processor to 366mhz (runs stable as hell at this speed)

When set at 550/PC-100 - (unstable)crashes with the same errors experienced before. This is where I am currently at.

I am on my third VA-503+ 1.2A (k6III compliant) motherboard (had other problems with the last two.

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am positive that I am well cooled and that the jumpers are set right. I have tried kingston, sec, micron and other generic mems to no avail.

Please Help!

I have the same board. I used to use a K6-2-350 and currently use a K6-3+-450. Never experienced these problems with my Kingston ValueRAM.

Couple things to check:
Make sure you have the proper voltage settings for your CPU.

Play with the memory settings in the BIOS. Try normal or fast instead of turbo.
Disable the bank interleave.
Set to CAS3 instead of CAS2.

Reset the BIOS with factory defaults.

There's a jumper for using a Cyrix CPU vs. an AMD or Intel. Make sure it's set right.

I'm assuming you're not trying to run SIMMS and DIMMS together. Also assuming that you're not trying to use the AGP slot and #1 PCI slot at the same time. Assuming you're using latest VIA drivers, vid drivers, etc., etc.

Hope this helped.

All of the settings are proper and jumpers are correct. I have also reset the bios and reset the bios settings as well.

I had the same problem.

Didn't have the time to figure it out so the K6-2/550 sits on the shelf.

Try setting it up with no cards except a regular pci video card. (This is my next step if I ever get around to it).

I have a feeling the voltage output is not correct on this board. If you know how, this is another thing to check. My chip got real hot, real quick.

If I think of anything else, I will post it.

Good luck and if you figure it out, please post it here,

Rich

Richie,

I do believe that I have fixed this problem.
I have the AMD K6-2/550 AGR model chip. AMD Recomends for this chip to run at 2.2v Min 2.3v Standard 2.4v Max. My problems were occuring at 2.2 and 2.3 when I jumpered it to 2.4, my random crashing went away. I am smooth sailing now.

For Heat I recomend a large heatsink fan with a small dab of thermal grease between it and the processor. Verify sufficiant cooling is available.

Had the same problem with a FIC board, I disabled the cpu cache memory in the cmos. PC runs like a scalded cat now.
