I've just built my 3rd Computer based on the Abit KT7A-RAID & 1 Gig T'bird.

Using my HDD from my previous computer, WinME boots perfectly but the FDD
does not work.
From booting up the light on the FDD stays on and won't detect any disks.

I've read posts from people in forums like Icrontic & Paul's FAQ and I know
there is a common problem with the MBoard. The FDD lead is connected the
right way with the twisted end connected to the drive.

I just won't to know how other people who've had this have solved it??

Thanx!!

***** UPDATE******
> I took the advice from several people and fiddled with the leads again. I
filed of the notches on the cable and tried every conceivable way of
connecting it but the FDD still won't accept any disks.
I know the Drive still works because I've tried it in my other computer, I
also tried two other drives but the same damm S*it keeps happening.

Could it be that I was unlucky enough to receive a DUD board??

Abit has lots of "dud" boards their quality control is very poor.

This a CLASSIC symptom of the cable being reversed, either at the FDD end of the mobo end. If you are POSITIVE that the cable is connected correctly then my guess is that the mobo is hosed. Make SURE that the red wire is connected to pin #1 on the FDD. Unlike HDDs where pin #1 is always nearest the power connector, it can go either way on FDDs.

daverme, I see you have been there too http://www.sysopt.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Getting the ribbon cable on incorrectly can be easy to do on floppy drive...and, it will cause the led to stay on. The only thing I could add here is to try another ribbon cable. I have seen these come bad right out of the box.

Interesting.

In the process of putting my KT7A (non-RAID) system together this past weekend, I attempted to install two different FDDs and had the same "light-on" phenomena. I swapped cables, checked and re-checked my connections, to no avail. I feared it was a defective FDD controller on my new board (2 for 2 is high odds).

On a last hope, I went to Fry's and bought a new, plain-wrap Sony FDD and new cable, installed it and it worked just fine - and still does.

Go figure! The "bad" FDD also works fine in my P3! I don't know what to think about it, but the new Sony FDD works fine in the KT7A. Maybe something about the FDD and/or ribbon needs to be new?
