i have a friend who is looking to build a cheap box (< $1000US). he only really wants to use it for surfing the net, working in office, and burning cd's. what would be a good cheap mobo that supports either a devent speed celeron or cheap p3 (preferibly a flip chip - but it doesn't have to support a high speed chip). i'd appreciate any help you can give.

oh yeah, a mobo with nt4 support would be appreciated. he has nt4 right now and would like to keep that.

If your friend just wants a 56K dial up, then get an e-Machine w/internet rebate. Can probably get one w/ a CD-RW and 17" for $199+ internet!

$1000 can build your friend a really decent setup!

19" Futura (by Viewsonic) $200
Asus CUSL2-C Motherboard $115
Intel FC-PGA chip (your choice)
Hard Drive--30 GB $100
Floppy--$12
DVD--$75
CD-RW $99
ATI Xpert 2000 (2x AGP--32 MB) $55, supports DVD through hardware and comes with DVD player
SoundBlaster Live Value $45
56K Modem-$15
Ethernet Card-$15
Logitec Optical Trackball $22
Keyboard--$15
Altec Lansing Speakers-$70
Case $35

Probably get a Retail Celeron 766 and hit $1000!

A cheapo board with acceptable quality might be an ECS P6BAT-A+ (about $50).

I've had good luck with the Abit VH6 (about $85) A little more money, but then you get what you pay for.

Most people search prices at pricewatch.com
Unless you find a special running at Staples, CompUSA, etc.
My personal opinion would be to go with a PC Chips 810LMR board. It has onboard sound, video, modem, nic. Cost $90. Then put a Duron cpu on it. They work good for what you're interested in.

Definitely build from new parts, and go Duron, not Celeron.

I just come from calculating a budget machine, and came out below $500!

PC-Chips M810LR mainboard (comes with AMR modem, integrated graphics, sound and LAN), Duron 650, 128 MByte generic PC133 SDRAM, case, 20 GB HDD, 48x CDROM drive, various bits and pieces to make it complete, sums up to roundabout DM 1000 (at way more than 2 DM for the US$).

Add an an ATAPI CD writer and an update from NT4 to W2K, and there's still way enough room in your $1000 for a very decent 17" monitor and a nice restaurant dinner to appreciate your consulting http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
