id recommend the boards that almost everyone seems to be using either, the kt7-raid or the a7v. I personally like the kt7 better.

Why do you like it better?

For starters i like the raid support its good to have (but i just noticed this
http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/Forum5/HTML/005561.html
you can also get raid support out of the a7v now.
The other factor is that i like the abit bios much better i feel it allows more options etc.
But either way you look at it choosing either one of these boards would be a great decision

I just bought the A7v, ASUS SOCKET A VIAKT133 CHIPSET, ATHLON/DURON 1GB,NO AUDIO.
I hope it is version 2. Unclear description.
Now I'm going after the AMD ATHLON 900 PGA.
Do you think Notepad.exe will load any faster than with my Compaq 233, 32 MB's of RAM? Maybe the ATI Expert 2000, 128-32MB will help if needed.
Will I notice any difference in performance?
This hardware stuff is fun, (as long as you have the bucks that is.)(ouch!)
Anyone know where I can get WinY2K Pro real cheap? Really cheap!
I just enrolled in Internet Proficiency, A+, and MCSE. Not much cash left to build this system. MCSE is being taught on the WinY2K Pro O/S now. I wanted the heads up on the program before I hit school. I didn't realize how expensive the WinY2K was until I just made a phone call. $480.00 Canadian.
Help!
Cheers!

MS offers deep discounts to US students, something so low I won't post it here.
Perhaps someone else knows the key to unlock the mystery here..
The ol Cranium deal is $112.00 US , I forget the exchange rate,,, err about $175.00 Can ?
I do buy from this company every now and then,, I get what I order, usually.
They did leave out a $4.00 item once, and NO I don't know if I was charged or not..
Be sure to check out the other software like Corel Word perfect and the other stuff.. Some prices are jaw dropping http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Well hopefully I have a good time when I start that course. I'm getting a learning lesson with securing the parts for my new system.
I'm looking at either a T-Bird 900 or 1000. I found a designation of 1000e (http://www.ncix.com/shop/pcdir.cfm?t=1&refresh=82438346&catid=CPU) . Any skinny on the "e".
The 900 or the 1000 (http://www.ncix.com/shop/pcdir.cfm?t=1&refresh=82438346&catid=CPU) What does "BOX" mean? I don't want to make any costly mistakes when making the order here.
Opinions Wanted:
What is the best 1000 T-Bird if there is a diference in a non "e" version?
What is the OEM mean? http://www.ncix.com/shop/top20.cfm?t=1
I'm looking at 256 MB of RAM. I don't want to go all the way to DDR as it costs a lot.
A7v, ASUS SOCKET A VIAKT133 CHIPSET is the board.
CORSAIR PC133 CAS 2 SDRAM 256MB 6 LAYER 168PIN CM654S256-133C2 (http://www.ncix.com/shop/detail.cfm?id=5798&cart=additem%2Ecfm)
The pages I am dealing with here are all Canadian prices since I live in Canada adn shipping will be faster.
Very expensive and would like to find a cross reference of good ram but a better price. I here that the Cas 2 is faster than Cas 3. Is this true?
TIA for any help forth coming.
Cheers!

I don't want to mix up threads here but I have moved this over to Steals & Deals for the final component. The RAM:

I have The Abit KT7A-Raid board and it is the best board I have ever had and it is solid and very tweakable.
