I have just gotten hold of an ATX case and a motherboard (an MSI K7T Pro with a VIA KT 133 chipset) that will take an Athlon or Duron. I have been using an AMD K6-2 400. Before I transfer my drives and stuff over to the new system, I need to know:-

1. Is it necessary to backup anything on my hard drive?

2. Will I need to reinstall my OS (Win 98), after I have transfered my hd over to the new system or, could I manage without doing so?

3. Will I need any sw patches for my new system? If so, what patches exactly and, where do I get them from?

4. Is it possible to convert my keyboard with a 5 pin din connector and my mouse with a 9 pin serial connector both over to PS2 connectors?

Help much appreciated.

Thanks

1. Not necessary unless you decide to reinstall the OS. But always a good idea cuz you never know when your HD will go bad.

2. Your HD may be able to survive the transplant, but I wouldn't count on it. I personally have a 25% success rate. And that was a mobo only transplant, keeping the same processor. Maybe back up your important files first and then try?

3. If you need any patches, they'll be on the AMD page I'm sure. You might get the service packs for your OS, too. But you'll be fine without patches, I've done it without and been fine.

4. You can get adapters for both your keyboard and your serial mouse at your local computer store. They're probably a few bucks each. Consider buying new ones since the price can often be under $10 each (if you look in the right places).
