I think you've answered your own question.

When the Melissa virus killed the BIOS on his board, a friend successfully re-flashed it on another board of the same type.

My motheboard with VX Pro chipset ended up with a dead BIOS during BIOS update. The board does not POST. Everything is dead, not even beep code.

The board has a AMI BIOS. I used another board, not the same model, to flash the original BIOS file into the dead chip but the flash BIOS program won't allow me to flash from the other board.

Any suggestion on how I can bring the dead board to life?

Read the BIOS flash information at this site: www.Amptron.com (http://www.Amptron.com)

I have read, I have never done it myself, that there is a 'boot section' of the BIOS that should remain even if the the board is apparently dead. What you do is put a floppy in drive A:, with the a BIOS file with an extention .ROM, turn the computer on, and the computer should flash itself from the file. I think the Amptron site has the exact instructions.

There is also another reason why the board may be apparently "dead". The new BIOS may have changed the DRAM settings for the memory and the memory timings may not be right, so the computer won't boot up. Try some real good memory, if you can get it, to get into the BIOS and change the settings on the Simms to make the board boot with your memory, if our using simms. You might try a Dimm, if you can get your hands on one.

Hi Willy:

I found the thing I read about flashing dead boards. It is part of the instructions I downloaded from a PCChips site for flashing an PCChips M550. It has an AMI BIOS similar to a VX PRO.

"If your PC doesn't boot anymore after flashing the BIOS, there might still be a way to flash
another BIOS file. Copy the BIOS file onto a bootable DOS boot disk (you'll ofcourse need
a second computer to do this) and rename the file to AMIBOOT.ROM. Next, boot with this disk
and during boot press Control-Home. This should activate the first 4K boot routine in the
BIOS (which is never overwritten by flashing) and flash the renamed BIOS file."

That's what I read. Good luck.
