there could be something wrong with the modem/maybe your telephone connection is weak

This can happen to any modem. This has happened to me numerous times before. I'm willing to bet anything, it's the router box your ISP is using. Give 'em a call and complain.

Of course, they'll deny it, but at least you bring it to their attention.

True this can happen with Any Modem, True This has happen numerous times before. Possable but doubtfull its the ISP.

I work for an ISP and we had/have a whole bunches of trouble with this modem among others. After about a week of putting up with it and try'n to find a problem on our end, I decided to get one of these modems for my personal use.

So I went and picked one up for $20 (the first thing that made me wonder), and put in into my system. It installed fine and I was able to connect at 42k, then 3 mins later i got dissconnected. Did the normal tweeks dialed in and connected at 45k and got dissconnected after about 10mins. Updated the drivers and connected at 42k again and was online for about 5 mins and got disconnected. Updated the Firmware got connected at 42k again, and was online for about 45mins before dissconnect, and it stay'd that way till it rained, after which i was lucky to get connected at all.

After searching multiple sites including www.56k.com (http://www.56k.com) I found out that this modem is a piece of junk (which i already know) and nearly all the ISP's are having a similar problem, which suggests that it is not the ISP thats causing you to get dissconnected.

The 2 major things that seem to be causing the problem are, the phone line conditions and system resources. It is a software base modem (like a winmodem). If you got 10 things running and you got 32mb of ram, your connection will drop with this modem.

Some things I've found that seem to help. Update the drivers and Firmware, and try some Init Strings. 2 basic ones that seem to help are AT+MS=v90 This forces v.90, sometimes modems try to connect Kflex at first and there has been some documented problems with connecting to a v.90 isp while using kflex. And AT+MS=v34 This turns of 56k altogeather, While not good for speed it usually reduces the disconnect problem quite a bit. If you dont' connect at 56k speeds any way...

The best fix i've found is a different good modem. You get what you pay for and this is a $20 modem. If you can borrow a modem to test before you buy i would, just incase the problem is your ISP/Phone lines you won't go waste your money.

any who I'm going on and on and on so i'm click'n submit now

the connexant is very sensitive to line noise as well, it tends to disconnect way too easily. btw many connexant modems have HCF chipsets.

check www.ez-net.com/modems.html (http://www.ez-net.com/modems.html)

I too just bought a Conexant K56/V90 PCI modem and was having major problems with disconnects. Although still not 100% I mostly fixed the problem by restricting the connect speed with an initialization string entered in (this is probably not exact) [control panel>modems>properties>advanced and at the bottom of the window the "extra settings" box]. To find the correct string to use I went to www.modemhelp.com(forgive (http://www.modemhelp.com(forgive) me if the address is wrong, didn't write it down). Hope this is of some value to you.

I had exactly the same problem, I bought a new PCI Conexant modem to replace my old PCI Conexant modem, and it kept dissconnecting itself from the net after about 30 seconds. I noticed the new Conexant modem I bought, was an updated version of my old one. I tried for hours to get it to work, and I couldn't. I have an Abit BX6 RV.2. Anyway, I took it back, paid a little extra, and got myself a DirectCOM external 56k, which worked instantly, and i have forever loved it.

what it comes down to is that you get what you pay for with modems...
get an HSP, conexant, HCF Rockwell or some other cheapo winmodem and DO NOT be surprised at how pooryl it works. if you are going to want reliable service from a modem buy a hardware modem. as in a modem that is either external or has jumpers on it.
