I was under the assumption that empty memory slots should have their "clamps" left in the open position if they dont have any memory in their respective slot. But if I do this, I can not get my TNT2 to fit in the agp slot.

I don't want to resort to trimming the "clamps", is it okay to leave them closed even though there is no memory in those slots?

Absolutely! All they do is keep the memory in place in the event of an 8.4 quake and aid in removing a stick when required. They have no electrical function.
