First, the following new DDR chipsets.

Ali Magik
Amd 760
Amd 761
Via ApolloPro 266

Why do they even release inferior chipsets? All reviews I've read complain that the Ali and ApolloPro 266 memory bandwith doesn't even compare some BX chipsets. Also, why did AMD release the 760 followed by the 761? The 761 is supposedly better, buy how?

Easy ... the technology is new, so are the chipsets. A couple BIOS updates later, we'll see what it's really capable of with a Duron or Athlon. Don't hold your breath on the P-III platform though, CPU bus bandwidth is too slow to take real advantage of fast RAM (as seen on i820).

AMD 760 is just the combined name for the pairing of 761 north and 766 south bridges.

Much like VIA Apollo Pro 266 is one name for two pieces - the PM266 north and 8233 south.

ALi, same thing - ALi Magik and MobileMagik use the same 1647 core, but a 1535D+ or 1535+ south bridge respectively.
