I have a shuttle ak10 mb with an athalon thunderbird 800 cpu. I have recurring problems that may be related to the ability of the mb to process certain data(or so I've heard). I understand there are mb's that are better suited to the faster athalon cpu's. May I have some suggestions? Thank you.
What is your budget for mobo ? Do you have something specific that it must have ?

I can spend around $150. I want a workhorse that can provide all-around reliable and reasonably trouble free performance. Thank you.

How about the Microstar KT7Pro2?
I am planning to build a new system, & people seem to like this board. Looks like it costs about $120.00

What kind of problems are you having? I have the same combo and am suffering with problems with the on-board audio. I didn't plan on getting the AK-10, but it was the only socket A MB available in stock at the local store, and I didn't choose to wait. The audio problems I have been having are:
1) With default audio drivers, any kind of audio played makes the system freeze until the sound is over.
2) With slightly newer downloaded drivers, audio plays fine for about 4-5 minutes of game play, then one of two things happens. The first is that the sound gets full of static like an off-tune AM radio station. The second is the sudden and total loss of sound until the system is rebooted or the driver is reloaded. Sometimes they both happen, first static, then no sound.
System in current configuration:
Supercase Mid-tower with 300Watt PS
Shuttle AK-10 MB
AMD Retail Athlon Thunderbird 800
256MB PC 133
ATI Rage Fury VIVO 32MB AGP 4X
Western Digital 7200rpm 30Gig HD
Maxtor 5400rpm 13Gig HD
8x4x32 LG CDRW
8X Panasonic DVD
Windows 98 SE
10/100 NIC connection to cable modem
Try looking at Epox. They have some of the most stable boards on the market.
I have a EP-8KTA+ and if I have a lock-up it's always my fault(I'm always trying to get a little more from the cpu*Duron650@918).

Hi everyone. Thanks for the suggestions. To MikMatani...exactly. The sound driver or onboard audio comes and goes AND the kind of fuzzy radio thing from time to time. I downloaded the latest drivers drom their site, http://www.spacewalker.com/english/, but the same problem occurs. A sound card may solve it.

Yeah - I'm gonna try a separate audio card. Seems like the best solution.

So far, so good...
put a simple PCI card in for testing from my spare parts shelf. Works fine and the computer response is better. Even though I used the jumper on the MB to disable the onboard sound, it was still detected when I restarted the computer, so I disabled it in the system settings as well.
