I have acquired an AMD K6-2 3D cpu and would like to know if I can get away with installing it on my motherboard (PC CHIPS M571) and if so what would the optimum jumper settings be. If not, what would be a recommended motherboard. With thanks in anticipation of any replies.

Do not buy PcChips motherboards.

what speed cpu. That board goes up to 300 MHz but only has a 66MHz bus. You can use the AMD K6-2 300AFR66 but this is really a rotten chip. Suggest you buy a super 7 board with at least a 100MHz bus

Just reread your post and didn't realize you already had the board. Sorry.

Hi!

The M571 needs to be v3.2A or newer to have 2.2V CPU power supply. The version is silkscreened onto the board, next to the keyboard connector.

If you have that, the board is K6-2 ready, but you are limited to either 75 or 83 MHz FSB, again depending on the board version. 83 MHz capable boards have the 83 MHz jumper setting silkscreened onto the board (that's a table of jumper settings actually).

You need to update to the latest BIOS for your board version _before_ swapping processors. Start from ftp.pcchips.com.tw/BIOS/M571 to pick the right one.

The 350 MHz K6-2 is the unlucky one however, as you won't be able to get near its target core frequency with the FSB frequencies you have. 75x4.5 is 337, 83x4 is 333. Higher FSB is desirable especially if you have SDRAM and use the onboard video. A K6-2 333 would just be perfect for this board.

But other than running it a bit slower than intended (or faster if you dare run it at 75x5 or 83x4.5), using a -350 should be fine.

Ah yes, in case you don't have an officially 83 MHz capable board and want to try anyway, the jumper setting is 1-2 1-2 2-3 2-3.

75 and 83 MHz FSB are with PCI at 33 MHz, so no harm done to the peripherals. Just stay away from 83 if you're not using SDRAM.

I Have A M571 V3.2 Mainboard Running A
Cyrix 6x86 Pr200. Running Good But Slow.

I Want To Put In A PR300. But Was Told I Can
Only Go Up To A Pr233 ???

The Core Voltage & Clock Mhz Is The Same.

Thanks MIKE

What revision is the board and what flavour is the chip. I belive that chip came in 2 cores with different voltage settings.

Anyway if it is a 2.2 Volt chip and your board is rev 3.2a then it should be fine however that speed is a lil awkward. Most of those chips with GOOD cooling will overclock a little bit.

Well, I'm in the office now and using one K6-266(not K6-2)running in one M571 running at 373.5 Mhz(4.5x83) without any problem since a year. My desk machine is one K6-2/350 running at 450 Mhz(4.5x100) in one M598 about 06 months and never had any problem.
So, I think that is a question of luck, in my house I have a K6-2/500 running at 600 Mhz in a M577(the best MoBo of PCCHIPS)and running since the mid of 1999 and I never had any trouble. All those machines are using big heatsinks(lapped), thermal paste (thin layer) and two big fans blowing fresh air over it(in my house I have 03 fans).
Try to do in little steps and be sure to not achive the 2.7 volts(that I feel that it's the safe voltage limit to K6-2)and the most important thing: Use good memory brands.

Good luck http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif

Hey guys, I forgot to tell that, actually, my M598 don't run at 100 Mhz but 95, the bios show that you are running at 450 Mhz but the real speed is 4.5x95 or 427.5.
Just to keep the foot in the ground !!

Happy new millenium to all http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif

M571 v3.2A or newer takes up to 400 MHz K6-2 (at 6.0x 66 MHz) or 300 MHz Cyrix (which would be an MII-433 2.2V 3.0x 100 MHz clocked at 4.0x 75 instead for "400" performance rating).

Older ones don't have 2.2V CPU support, and the best you can fit into those is a Cyrix MII-333 2.9V 3.5x 75 MHz.

I Do have A 3.2a Board and It Goes Down To
2.2v Core And Has A Bus Speed Up To 83Mhz.

So It Looks Like I Can Try A Cyrix 6x86
Pr233 2.5v Core.
OR A Little Higher.

One More Question:

Can I USE PC100 DIMM's???

I Got My hands On 1 128MB And 132mb

My Friend at work said I Need To Use PC66's?

Because My Board Only goes Upto 83 mhz

Help?!?!

All PC100 chips are backwards compliant. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong I'm sure, but I haven't heard anything to the contrary.

PC100 DIMMs are OK - speedwise. There might be DIMMs that are too large to be supported by ye olde SiS 5598 chipset. 64-MByte single-sided 8-chip DIMMs do work though (using BIOS 99/04/21) , and so do 128-MByte double-sided 16-chip. Not sure about 128-MByte SS 8-chip or 256-MByte DS 16-chip, these _might_ also work, but I didn't try.

My M571 mb is running great with a pair of 128Meg DIMMs. It runs a K6-2 500 at 6*83 very nicely. I tried a 256 DIMMbut it didnt work.

Oh the onboard video doesnt work at 83 MHz and my board wouldnt get past POST till I jumpered the PCI bus to clk/2 rather than 33.

Bdunn, I read that several times -- I might have to try it shortly. My concern is that I've come across statements that this'll cook the DMA bus (normally 4 MHz). Heard anything 'bout this?

Its been running this way over 8 months and nothing cooked yet.

First -

Ok I Just Put In My Cyrix M II Chip Pr233
(Cyrix MII-233-MMX)
( 2.9v core, 75 mhz, 2.5x clock speed )
^ THis is what The Chip says.

I Set The Jumpers That Way And I Get
200MHz ( Is This Only A 200Mhz Chip ?)
How Do I Get 233 ??

If I Set The Jumper For 3.0x It Will Run

225Mhz But It Will Say: Cyrix M II PR300
As The Name Of The Chip.

Is This A Good Setting ???

---------------------------------------------
Second -

I Put In 1 - 128Mb Dimm (PC100) And
1- 64Mb Dimm (PC100)

And Set The Jumper For 3.3v Likee It Said.

And Turned It On And Nothing!?!?!

Am I Doing Something Wrong ??? Or Did I
Get Bad Chips ???

Is It That This Board Only Will Goto
64 Mb Per Dimm Chip ??? ( 128Mb SDRAM)

MIKE
