Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : TYAN Trinity KT (S2390) compatible with AMD DURON 800?
I recently bought the above 2 items. According to the TYAN Homepage, they are supposed to be compatible. But They don't seem to work for me. The BIOS booted up fine, but Windows 98 SE (set up for the previous motherboard) was stuck at the 98 logo. I re-installed Win 98 SE on a new HD. It didn't have a problem to get into Windows, but the performance was poor. It was slow while opening a window, and it got stuck at shutdown. I use PC100 RAM, which is also supported by the motherboard. Can RAM be the problem? If I put PC133 RAM, will the problem be resolved?
I appreciate any comments and suggestions.

pc-100 works fine. i used 128 meg of pc-100 for 3 months on my asus a7v. it is always a good idea to do a reformat and fresh install of the os when you change motherboards/cpus. windows might have a hard time switching the drivers around. i would try that. also, what video card are you using? i'm not familiar with that board, but if it has a via chipset, download and install the latest via 4in1 drivers.

i was looking on the tyan page about this motherboard. does your system show a 800 mhz duron at startup? the early bios for that board only supported up to 750mhz. the latest bios for that board is 1.07. if yours is lower download the newest one here. http://www.tyan.com/support/html/b_tr_kt.html
also, get the latest via 4in1 drivers here http://www.viatech.com/drivers/index.htm
hope this helps you.

Thanks, tcul72. I visited those websites. I flahed with 1.07 BIOS and installed the latest 4-in-one drivers. But the problem is still there. Yes, the BIOS before 1.07 recognized Duron 800 at startup. My video card is ATI Xpert98 (PCI). I tried with only video card on the motherboard, but didn't get any improvement. The newly installed Win98 SE still ran weidly and got stuck at shutdown. Is there any possibility that the motherboard or CPU is defect? Or my PC100 RAM is too slow to drag the system?

It's not a motherboard/CPU compatibility problem and not likely a RAM problem either, you either have something set/installed wrong or a bad part. Have you tried running this with just the CPU/RAM/video card/HDD/floppy installed? What else do you have hooked up?
Thanks, wedor. Like I said in the previous message, I did try without any other cards on than video card. But the result is still disapponting. That's why I think of compatibility of RAM, although it runs perfectly on my old motherboard. I have 2 64 MB PC100 RAM chips, which should be more than enough for Win98 SE. It happened to me before that my old CPU AMD K6 400 needed a patch from Microsoft website to run Win95. This time I checked MS site, but did not find anything like that, yet.
Just got a new idea. Will that be a problem of video card, since Win98 SE runs ok on the Safe Mode?

Yiin I'm running an ATI Rage Fury Pro with a D650/MSI socket A board with no problems. But your card is older have you tried updated drivers from ATI's site? http://support.atitech.ca/drivers/index.html
