I was wondering... can I use an FSB changer utility with my PCChips 598lmr board? I mean, we pcchips owners know that the boards are supposed to work at a 100 fsb level but it just reaches 95! It's there a way to fool the m/b and to make it reach 100mhz?
I got a AMD k6-2 500mhz and it's currently running at 475mhz. I had it running at 523mhz for some time but I didn't noticed too much improvement (maybe because the bus stayed at 95!??!!??).
So if you have any suggestion... throw it in!
Bye..

I have not tryed it but you cant hurt the board tying so go for it I would upgrade the bios though to the latest if you have not done so allready that might give you full 100MHz support in the bios
Note : there are some older revision's of that board that will not do 100MHz FSB

The thing is that in the BIOS it says 100 in the FSB but inside Win98, every program detects 95mhz. So, then, a BIOS update would do?
I don't trust BIOS updates but if the jump in speed is worth it, I'll give it a try! What do you think?
Also, how do I know what version of the board do I have (v6.0 , v5.0, etc) and what's the PLL Chip of this board?
Thanks a bunch..!!!!

The v5 and v6 boards look the same, and there are v1.3A boards too.
It seems the v1.3A boards can do 100 MHz. My suspicion is that the v5 and v6 are actually the same with the v5 ones having not-really-100-MHz-capable cache chips on them. Or so. The v5 and v6 boards have green stickers on the board and BIOS chip saying "v5" or "v6".
Seems too that the BIOS reports the speed you selected in Setup, not the actual outcome ...
Anyway, the PC-Chips site doesn't have different BIOSes for v1.3A, v5 and v6 boards anymore - so use their latest one and see what happens.
Find the clock synthesizer: It's a smaller chip, 48 pins or so - it's near the DRAM sockets, CPU and chipset, and it's the one chip with the most tiny bits (capacitors and resistors) around it.

Thanks alot for the info. You have been very helpful. It seems that you know everything about PCChips boards, do you work for them or something?? hehehe
Anyway, I'll look into it tommorow! I haven't done a BIOS upgrade before so what happens if the flash goes bad?

Hi!
100 MHz support on the 598LMR is a matter of BIOS. There were BIOS releases for "v6.0" boards that do 100 MHz, while those for "v5.0" boards don't. However, I haven't tried later BIOSes to see whether they do 100 MHz or not. I have a single M598LMR within reach, and that one has a 75 MHz bus Cyrix MII in it ... that's certainly worth a try, latest is from September. http://www.pcchips.com.tw/BIOS.html
But don't expect any miracles from higher core clock on K6-2 - replacing a /500 with a /550 has minimal effect on actual performance, and so does the step from 475 to 522.
