I have a Dell Celeron 400 system. Can I put an Athlon Motherboard in there, or is there proprietary **** (like power supply connector) that won't let me do it? I want to reuse everything else if possible.

I would bet on it that it only has at the most a 235 Watt power supply in it and that will not power a Athlon at all I would use it all except the bot it came in get a new one with a 300 watt supply in it then you will not run into trouble setting it up and your ram is more than likely only PC 66 not 100 so you will have to change that to but it is so cheap now I put 128 megs more in all my servers

If it were me doing it I would look to the future upgrades that will need more power that in mind you can never have to much power I am upgrading all my severs next month with 400 watts and 450 in my home sys

PS: Welcome to SysOpt hope this will help you out in your decision on upgradeing. All my sys are Athlons so i can tell you they are power hungry

Thanks. The computer is actually my son's at Purdue. It sounds like the cheapest way to higher speed would be to upgrade the 400 Celeron to whatever the power supply can handle, and then fill it up with as much RAM as it can handle. Since it's a Dell, I take it overclocking is out of the question. He's doing AutoCAD now, and is feeling the speed crunch. The board also has integrated video. Maybe it's time to pass the whole box off to his English major sister.
