edit: got it fixed. hope this saves you from reading an incredibly long post. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

I've been running the same bios since jan. I haven't flashed my bios at all. why is this happening? well here's the whole story. well I've got an abit bp6 dual cel 366@583 256mb ram CL tnt2. turned off my computer put in a linksys nic and tried to boot up. nothing happens. tried the jumpers to discharge/clear the cmos. and nothing happens. thought it was my vid card so I tried one from my other pc and again nothing happens. both vid cards work in the other pc. took out the ram and tested it on another comp and memory is fine. took out one cpu and tried it. nothing happens. tried just one cpu in socket 2 and again nothing. no screen comes up 29/30 times. one out of 30 times the screen will come up and I get this cmos checksum error. I can actually hit f1 to continue or del to enter bios. (but this is like 1/30 times if I'm lucky). I tried the cpu's in different comps and they fine. thing is that I had tried the linksys nic the night before and same thing happens. only that about 1 hour later I could reboot. I by no means believe that nic could do this to my comp so of course I tried it again today. no go.and again I thought I'd just wait an hour or so and then clear the cmos and reboot. removed the nic. except now after 30 reboots I might get a screen to come on once and then it detects my cpu as a cel366 and then just freezes. no memory count or nothing. after 60 reboots or so I finally got it to check memory and ide devices and then it says "cmos checksum error press f1 to continue and del to enter bios." I enter the bios and everything is at default. no overclock etc. tried to reboot and nothing comes on the screen again. after waiting for an hour and then rebooting like 30 times I finally get a startup screen again. this time at the cmos checksum error sign I press f1 to continue and it simply goes to the win2k splash screen and the blue progess meter gets halfway and just freezes. another probably 30+ reboots and I now I try to boot win98. i just get the splash screen and it freezes. I have checked everything in my opinion. been running the nj bios since jan. never even flashed the bios so I have no clue why i get the cmos checksum error. and I've tried the last thing I can think of and that's trying and ISA vid card. but alas no boot up. looks like the infamous abit RMA issues. any help would be greatly appreciated http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif thx

Ok, make sure your clear-CMOS jumper is on proberly. Make sure your battery is fully seated and then clear the CMOS and try again. I really dunno what it could be, but try the above http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif Good luck

do you hear any beep(s)?(does your pc-speaker work?).You can check your mobo instruc. booklet to see what the number of beeps means.

Glad to hear you got it workin. I was in the process of giving you a reply when I noticed that you found the problem. Good thing, 'cause I obviously wasn't on the right track and my suggestion would not have helped in this case.

It could be the nic or maybe a file I got from my cousin. though I haven't heard of too many files that screw with your bios. tough to say. but I'm happy to be up and running again. thx for the replies. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
