what does flashing your BIOS mean?

It means updating it.

If you have an old bios and you get some new device that requires the bios to support it, then you need to flash an update to the bios. This is of course if the mobo suppoets it.

An example would be, I have a FIC 503+ mobo and just purchased an AMD k6-2/550 chip. The old bios had a problem with the new processor, but FIC has a bios update that will support it.

Updating or flashing the bios should only be done if you have to. If everything works fine, don't mess with it.
