Wtih the exception of the Abit and Asus Socket A offerings, could any suggest an alternative mobo to run Duron700 / MX / PC100 memory?

I've used Epox and DFI boards, with nothing to complain about. Try to keep your feet still for a few more weeks, in order to get the latest B revision of the VIA 686 south bridge chip for UDMA100 support.

DFI calls that revised board AK74EC (was SC), and Epox renames their 8KTA+ to 8KTA2.

I'm using a pcchips m805lr - not sure about the capability at 133 for the memory- but that's the only problem I had, besides some difficulty loading the sound drivers following the directions in manual (had to manually load from cd to get working). Since you were only interested in running with pc100 memory that shouldn't be an issue.

There's a lot that runs well for this modestly priced board. Kids love it for Madden 2001. On-board LAN and on board sound and sound programs are fine. With an AGP video you will only have the 2 pci slots - I'm not using either. I don't use a modem with it but you could try an AMR in it. All the devices were detected and function fine in Corel Linux Deluxe and I also have it running without problem in WinMe. Not for overclocking as there are no jumpers to change the multiplier. (If you're adventuorous you could always go with manually closing/oprning bridges on the Duron.

I know you don't want to hear it, but I just have to say that I have exactly what you have on an A7V. If I were you I would seriously consider this mobo, seeing as the mobo is the one most important part of the computer, and the last part you want to go cheap on.

i agree. the asus a7v seems to be the best board for socket a. more pricey, but undertow is right, the m/b is the most critical(and overlooked) part of a system. don't skimp if you can help it. i know what it is like to not be able to afford and extra 50 dollars or so, but i saved an extra month just so i could get the a7v.
btw. look around on pricewatch.com i saw some places that had a7v's for 130 dollars. very cheap considering i paid 180 for mine a month ago.

Well, A7V goes for almost DM 400 here, while the DFI AK74EC is 289 and the ECS K7VZM aka PCChips M805LR is 279 - only the latter includes LAN (yet has only 2 PCI slots).

With all those boards being on AMD's Recommended Mainboards list, and the ECS/PCChips running PC133 SDRAM just fine if you don't happen to use the early BIOS revisions, the A7V is just one thing - way overpriced.

Effwon: I have an FIC AZ 11 board with a 700 mhz Duron. I'm running Windows 2000. Very stable board.

Not to disrespect gkline's choice in boards. But I would stay away from any FIC product. I have used their boards in the past and have been disappointed. They don't give you the quality for the $.
You can buy a Abit or Asus board and be overjoyed instead.
I'm sure others will disagree, but this is my opinion from personal experiences.
