Thanks for turning me on to Napster! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif I love it!

One thing I need to know though, is it legal?

Well the RIAA is disputing that point right now. Trading MP3's is perfectly legal as long as they're by artists who approve of their music being distributed freely. Also, if you have the original CD, it should be ok to d/l the MP3 versions as you please.

In reality, both of those cases are in the minority. The majority of Napster's uses are illegal which is why RIAA is saying the whole program is illegal.

I dont think you should say

since the artists themselves have no say in it, ususally it is their label that gives the ok. Most artists love the idea, thats why they support mp3.com and release their own.

Labels like pretty unlikely to let their money slip betweent their fingers, and keep a pretty short leash out there for the bands.

Wiz, that's probably more accurate. I guess what I mean to say is not all MP3's are illegal. I was thinking of people who work at a coffee shop, and just record their music and put it on the internet w/out a big time record company.

one of my favorite bands, Less Than Jake used to distribute their own mp3s, i think they even got into a fight with their label over it and ended up walking away from theri label...

You guys hear about the competition to Napster? It's called Cute MX, from the makers of Cute FTP. You can get a variety of files with it instead of just MP3s.

Find out more about it here: http://www.globalscape.com/products/cutemx/

Some differences though:
it connects to the same central server each time. You can put someone on your friends list and actually meet them again.
search isn't as well implemented as nap
doesn't keep you as well informed for ping/connx speed
people actually chat in the chat rooms (so you can make requests, hang out, ask about lyrics, etc)
they're not being sued by the RIAA, yet... (as warthog said) you can trade files other than mp3
it can go through 1 firewall (but not 2). (napster can't go through any)
lots of extra features: enemies list, better personal messaging than nap, built-in mp3 player and browser, etc.

Like Napster, it's also still in beta.

Scour.net has a competing product with Napster, actually looks pretty cool. Unfortunately, it is in beta and does not offer firewall support. Cannot wait for final version.

These 'files' most likely contain Aureate/Radiate spyware like Cute FTP... http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

What is Aureate/Radiate?

Warthog

Yeah...what is that? And is that theory or fact?

I'm only guessing that this Cute MX contains the spyware; Cute FTP definitely does...

Go here (http://grc.com/optout.htm) to read all about the 'spyware', Aureate/Radiate and OptOut (as well as a list of the HUNDEREDS of proggies that carry the spys).

CuteMX IS a "host to the advertiser sponsorship technology" of Aureate/Radiate. So are Getright and Gozilla! Says so on Algee's link:
http://grc.com/optout.htm

The site also has the most extensive disclaimer I ever saw. Aureate/Radiate must have been really convincing for this guy to backtrack this way...

I don't know anything about this "technology" yet but is there really any way it can be harmless? Algee, can one install that Optout Spyware removal prog without risk?

Hi there,

Does anyone know how to change files, such as the ones from real jukebox, to MP3 format so I can share them on Napster?

Keermalec, sorry I missed your reply until now.
The answer depends on how you define "risk".
OptOut will remove all traces of 'spyware' from your system. However, in doing so, it kills the app that the code came in on. Therefore, you won't be able to use Gozilla, CuteFTP etc... That's the only 'risk' involved http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

Hi again,

Does anyone have any advice on the converting question I asked?

John: what types of files are you trying to convert again? I used real jukebox awhile back and I remember the files it played as being MP3's. What are the file types you are playing with real jukebox?

Gomer,

The files have an extension of .RMX
