I bought an ASUS P3B-F Board and an Intel PIII 500 Mhz. It will not get past the post because it keeps locking up. The BIOS says the CPU speed is incorrect. When I install my PII 400Mhz it works fine. I tried flashing the BIOS from AWARD ver 1004 to 1006 but that did not work. I don't know what else to do? Is the CPU Bad or is the MB Bad? And ASUS tech support is non-existent.

did you follow all of the manuals instructions correctly, i.e. the position of the dip switches, they must be in a certain position to be able to use the softmenu in the bios, I have a P3B-F and have never had any problems, starting with a celeron 400, than a P-3 500 and am currently running a P-3 700E.If I remember right if there are errors in the cpu/frequency it will give you a prompt and post the cpu at a 66mhz. FSB setting. You should have three choices on your FSB depending on the Multiplier lock that the board picks up, it will give you mhz. speed for a 66mhz. FSB a 100mhz. FSB or manual. If your dipswitches are set correctly pick 500 for your processor.

I believe I did follow all the instruction in the manual. I did not touch any of the dip switches. I left everything at the default basically. I left the board in JumperFree mode. When locks I reboot and it goes directly to the BIOS where the CPU speed settings are. The message basically says the CPU speed is incorrect and your computer could hang. It gives a list of manual, 233 and 500 I keep selectiong 500 and it still hangs. I don't know what else to do. My PII 400 chip will work if I use it but I want to use the 500.

Try using the dip switches instead of the "softmenu" the settings are in the manual.

might also wanna check the JEN jumper it should be in the jumper free position which I believe is 2-3

Thanks for all of the suggestions. It does show me 333 or 500 as a choice. I did try setting the DIP switches manually but it still does not work. Could there be something wrong with the CPU itself? I reread the manual and I can't seem to see what I am doing wrong.
The MB is in JumperFree mode. So all DIP switches are set to off. The jumper is in 2&3 for JumperFree. I set the
CPU speed to 500
CPU core is greyed out but say's 5.0x
CPU Bus is greyed out but say's 100/33.43
CPU VCore is set to 2.0V
CPU Level 1 cache is enabled
CPU Level 2 cache is enabled
CPU Level 3 Cache ECC CHeck is Disabled
BIOS update is enabled
PLEASE HELP

As long shot try disabling both CPU caches. From Vcore I take it its original P3 not Coppermine which uses 1.65 Volts

If my memory serves me correctly, i think there is a speedhold error option somewhere in bios. Disable it, then set the speed to 100x5.0. After that, it shouldnt check anymore! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
