I'm just proud of myself or something, but I just rigged up seperate toggle switches for all my case fans. Complete with LED power lights. Now I don't have to deal with all that noise when I'm just online and can turn them on or off as I need. If anyone else is interested, I learned how at this link: http://www.3dgameforce.com/articles/fantoggles/ Thanks for listening. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Spencer, that's pretty cool! Very nice, clean job on it.
I was thinking of doing the switching thing as well, and you just made it real easy for me (I'll only need one switch, though! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif ).
Thanks!
PS I knew what the "black thing" was, but what is that "Live Drive"(?) thing above the "black thing"? Hehehehe

For what reason would you want to switch a fan off? Do low-noise levels outweigh the risks involved in CPU overheating?

On my system, the front case fan isn't always needed (I'm not overclocking) if I'm not doing anything of intensity. It IS a bit noisy and vibrating though.
THis guy had four or five fans, so maybe he didn't always want his computer hovering off the floor like a hovercraft..(which are also very noisy).

OH MAN. I have been looking for something like this for ages. I didn't have the guts to do it myself but I am for sure going to do this within the next week or so. I had to unplug my fans since it drove me up the wall with the noise.
I'm going to head down to Radio Shak on Sunday to get the necessary stuff.
I'll let eveyone know how well I do on this task. There is only one problem, I would like a few more fans inside, since this chasis gets quite hot. It's a beautiful case (full tower AT). It has 5x 5 1/4 and 2x 3 1/2 bays. The only problem is that it doesn't have much room in the front for a fan. Only at the bottom (it has feet), and possibly at the back. I'm going to see what else I can rig up inside it if i can get the switches to work correctly http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
The fans drive me NUTS with the humming http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Here's a suggestion:
you could rig up a thermistor to kick the fans in when the inside of the case gets warm. That way, changes in ambient temperature are taken care of and the fans only run when required, minimising excessive noise.
I don't think the electronics would be difficult - remember building one of those light sensor things that turned a little bulb on when it got dark? A similar idea could be used to control fans - just a bit of improvisation required!!
Just a thought!

Good work Spencer, I like the link

Interesting idea, Krusty. How do you hook up the thermistor to the switches, though? Some kind of microcontroller?

The electronics wouldn't be too difficult krusty the klown. You should build something like that, then post your findings *grin*.
Maybe I'll get super bored one day over the summer, and bug one of my EE friends to design it *grin* (shouldn't be too hard for them) http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
